  • 9N serial # 9N302
  • I have a 1939 9N that I use to scrape my driveway and a few small jobs around my place. A friend suggested that with such a low serial number that this tractor has an unusually high value.
How would I go about finding out what the tractor is worth?

  • Not doubting your claim Bruce, just want positive identification that's all. ALL 9N, 2N, and early 8N serial numbers began and ended with the STAR * symbol. That simply designated steel cylinder liners were used in the block, but doesn't mean they still have them. Only a tear down would determine for sure or if, and a pretty good chance, cast iron sleeves were installed in the block at some point in a previous rebuild. Since no N parts are in the 300 part number range, you are probably looking in the right place but just so others who don't know can see, here is where to look:

Also, go to John Smith's web site to see some tell-tale signs on N-Series Tractor ID by the model years...

As the others have stated, early 9N's had many unique parts. An early number like 302 would have had an aluminum hood; small 'A' 2-wire/2-brush generator with a rectangular voltage regulator behind dash; large non-pressurized radiator and a chrome STANTZ cap; 20/20 ammeter; key switch right side dash next to oil gauge; ignition "ON" red lamp, lower left dash below ammeter; starter button on left dash; chromed throttle plate and lever; double ribbed fenders; 4-spoke steering wheel with large chrome center cap; snap-in battery access door; fuel tank has fill spout central; smooth doglegs; horizontal bar aluminum grille; smooth rear axle hubs; muffler shield; no running boards; left and right brake pedals; no bumper; lights optional, but would be the large CM HALL truck style headlights and a TAURUS taillight; 8 x 32 6-loop rims with 9 x 32 closed center 45° bar rear tires; 3 x 19 front rims w/4 x19 single rib front tires; and many more items. Just to give you an idea, in the past year or so there's been at least three early 9Ns sold at auctions ranging from $10k to $50k and none were completely original. Best bet short of an actual close-up and personal inspection would be to post about two or three dozen good pictures. If you do have #302, then you'd be real close to my buddy Jason Grooms' early 9N, s/n *9N-287* and IS all original and un-restored and another good buddy Steve Dabrowski who has a s/n close too and he did a fabulous job restoring his 9N-

Early 9N Aluminum Dash and correct components, owned and restored by Steve Dabrowski:

You'll have to post your pictures on a photo hosting site like Photobucket or IMGUR and then link them in your post here. We have instruction in our HOW-TO's forum. If you can't do that, my email is open and you can send them to me and I'll post for you.

  • Could be worth a lot, Could be worth a little. but some of the big factors are, are the dash, hood, and "side panels" Aluminum? If so, probably worth a quite a bit. Then there's factors like did it have the early and rare generator, rear rims, starter button in the dash, etc. Pics would help a ton if you could figure out how to get them posted.

  • If you can it would help to post some pictures. All 4 sides and of the dash and serial number would be a big help. The more original parts it has the more it should be worth.
