  • Dearborn 20-5 lime spreader bearings
  • I bought a Dearborn 20-5 lime and fertilizer spreader because I was wanting to spread some lime. The agitator is in good shape but the bearings have frozen up solid. Has anybody on here ever had the bearing housings apart. Is there a needle bearing in there or some other kind of bearing? Thanks for all your help.

  • Have you tried some PB Blaster to try and free up the bearings??
Lime and such will rust them good, but you may be able to work them loose...

  • I don't think there is any freeing these bearings up. One of the bearings has rusted and expanded and it cracked the bearing housing. I hate to junk it because the auger is in good shape.

  • I saw those and looked thru them but all I saw in the parts book was the whole bearing assembly, housing and all. I was hoping someone on here has torn one of those spreaders down before and would know. I am going to have to heat these cherry red to get it apart and I'm afraid it will destroy the bearings inside.

  • If no other course is available, it is probably possible to cut/weld a new shell and pour a Babbitt bearing. They still sell Babbitt metal and the special putty to contain it in place while it solidifies. A slow moving shaft well greased in a Babbitt bearing should last for years.

  • Next step might be a bearing shop. Made friends with those before. Sometimes they can do great work. Show them the old one. Good luck.
