  • What year did the input shaft gear on the 2N change from straight to angled? I'm guessing 1944. Or was it earlier?

  • My "43" war horse #9N113429 has a helical cut gear in it and have owned it since 1954.But then again it has a Sherman in it so if the cluster gear was changed when the Sherman was put in I don't know.I know there was some straight gear Shermans also.

  • My Very Original Mid 19432N on Steel #9N114711 has straight cut input. My Very original May 19442N (been in the family since the 1960's)#153307 has Helix cut input. So late 1943-early-1944 is my best guess. Thanks, Jason Grooms

  • I always thought it was '42 or maybe '43. All my '41's were straight not helical cut. I opened up a '43 not to long ago but that had a sherman so that don't count.

  • Kirk, this one is out of my "42" 2N so it was probably a littlie later.

  • Del
I just checked my late '42 early '43 and it has a straight cut shaft.
If somebody has a later '43 or '44 and wants to check it's easy enough to do just pull the fill plug on the trans and shine a light inside to see if it's straight cut or helical.

  • I just found a picture of the inside of the transmission on the "44" 2N that I used to have. Don't know which gear is which. Maybe you can see if its visible and which type gear it is. I am trying to find the paperwork with the serial number on it!!

  • The gear is helical. If you look on the left hand side of the photo You can also see the mating gear also is helical.

  • Some say, 9N to 2N, others say 1947. I personally can't say. Nice to hear from you again Jim.
