  • Question for the 12 volt expert
  • Using two 12 volt batteries connected in series, running a 24 volt motor.
I only have a 12 volt charger. If I hook the charger up to one battery, then jump it to the other battery, in parallel, will it charge both at the same time, or will I have to remove the series jumper before it will work?

  • Used to have a Ranger bass boat that had a 24V trolling motor. When those batteries needed charging, a switch on the front panel was switched. The charger (12V) was hooked up and charged both batteries. I believe there was some kind of isolator in the switched circuit. This was on a mid 80's boat, so nothing THAT technical. I googled "24 volt trolling motor charging schematic", lots of results. Hope this helps. Mark

  • You need to remove the series connector.

  • you can take the + to - series connector and make it the + to + parallel connector just while you charge the batteries. I always wondered if you could take two 12 volt chargers and hook them in series, but never was brave enough to try it...

  • Matched chargers should work. Different amperage chargers could run into trouble.

  • If you use matched chargers, you don't have to hook them in series. You can hook one to each battery in the normal way. The series jumper doesn't come into play there.

  • LOL! Absolutely true but that was not his question.

Don't know his setup. Is the "center tap" available? Would not even have to have matched chargers if it is.
