  • finish mower size?
  • I am looking to buy a used finish mower to use on my '51 8N. It runs pretty good but isn't fresh by a long shot. What size finish mower would best suit my tractor? I was thinking 5 feet? Also, are there any brands to avoid? I have owned a 6 foot Woods before that I used behind an IH 404.

  • I'm running a 6 foot Woods belly mower on my 1950 8N. It works just fine. In the past I used a 6 foot 3 point mower on it and it was about all the 8N could handle. So I would say that 6 foot is the max. All this assumes the 8N engine is in good condition.

  • I've had my 6' Woods over 20 years and have pulled it with both an 8N and My jube.
My son also has a 6' Woods and pulls it with his Jube. In all instances the 8N and Jubes have done the job without problems.

  • HiYa Mark-
I have had a WOODS 660 Finish Mower for my ten acres. I highly recommend you invest in set of stabilizer bars too. I first used a 5' brush hog and it did nothing but tear up the lawn on turns. The bars need to be installed one correct way so if you opt for them post back and we can help. If not set up right, you can do major damage to the lift arms and/or hydraulic pump. The stabilizer bars are sold today separately or in a kit with bars, brackets, check chains, and link pins. Pictured below are set a of the original Dearborn Brackets and a set of aftermarket angle iron ones.

  • Thanks for the pics on the sway bars. I use them on my 6' scrape blade which works wonders. I've got a line on an older Bush Hog 72" mower I plan to go look at this weekend. I'd rather buy a quality used mower than one of the cheaper new mowers.

  • I like the 6' behind my '51 8N. 5' is too narrow, won't mow outside the tire track. If you can't cut it with a 6' then you likely let the grass grow too long.

  • I have a China knock-off of a Caroni 6' rear discharge finish mower behind my 2N. It works very well now that I put Caroni blades on it. The 2N is somewhat tired, and it has no problem handling the 6' mower as long as you don't let the grass get over 4" high. I have a brush mower for that.

  • Son-in-law really likes this 60" Woods 503 belly mower on his 2N, It looks like a really good heavy built mower
