  • power steering
  • I am buying an 861 ford without power steering. I am talking to a guy who has one of the original ones he says. Does anyone have an idea as to how much it should be worth if in decent condition? thanks. I am way out of my field here so any help would be more than appreciated.

  • I have sold 4 complete ps systems for 3 cyl Thousand series tractors ainnd two sets for Hundred Series in the last 10 years.
I go through them completely, install upper lower seals, orings, etc in the hyd control column and replace oil and seals in the bottom end and I replace the tie rod ends as needed.
To put original ps on your tractor you MUST get the complete package.
This includes the column, tie rods, radius rods, two hydraulic cylinders, 6 hydraulic lines and the pump.
I got $1000 for each of them and they sold Quickly. On a couple of them I took their manual box in trade - $75 off the price.
The ps system on a Hundred Series is almost identical to a 3 cyl tractor though nothing will interchange except tie rod ends and the cylinders.
If i could buy a complete kit for $400 I would do it in a heartbeat. Costs $100-$150 to completely rebuild one IF the pump is good.

  • Jim, did you ever look at the new power steering kits that are available from Jackson Power Steering If not, you may want to price a new one and then discount accordingly if you decide to make an offer on the used one.

I looked at adding factory power steering to my 3000 over a decade ago and the Ford dealer wanted around $880 for the parts alone.

    Hope this helps.........Ed

  • Ed, for the used one the guy is asking 400 which is subject to negotiation. For the old original ones do you know how available parts are? I will check out the resource you mentioned. Thanks

I do not. If you have a local New Holland dealer, call their parts dept. and check. The New Holland dealer here in my area has been around since 1947 and they still have parts/paint/etc. for the N's, etc. They were who I called when thinking about putting it on my 3000.

Jackson Power Steering has been a reliable provider of tractor accessories for a good while now. Roland used to drop in here occasionally. He's a good guy.
