  • Sherman "2 speed"
  • I found another 8n advertised as having a sherman with a two speed. I asked for further clarification, but no additional information (the owner doesn't know).
How can I check to see what it is?

Can I Jack up the rear end and spin the pto to find out?

  • Sherman 2 speed would probably be high/low. You could check the shift pattern and spin the wheels. The shift pattern is on John Smiths site. SeeLinks...

  • Kirk, thanks for taking the time to make the video! I was reading Jon Smith's website and was thinking it also can be determined by the handle. The tractor I'm looking at has a C shaped curve (not straight like most start-ups. Is that another way to tell?

  • Here is a photo of the step up/down and combo/creeper handles.
If your handle is like the one on the right it is highly likely it's a combo. The creeper are so rare that the likelyhood is nil to almost none to finding one. The creeper will have a single rail system so in the neutral dentent you will not be able to move the handle away from the tractor to access another gear range.

  • If the tractor is running and able to drive ask him when he moves the lever back towards the operator will the tractor speed up or slow down. If not running you can use the system in my video to determine a step up or step down. The 8n, because of the gearing, will be slightly different but you still should be able to tell.
Often sellers who have a sherman combo do not realize that in the neutral detent you can put the handle out and back to access the normal range gears so they will advertise it as a sherman Hi/Lo. I also have a video on youtube, under Kirk-NJ, explaining the different style sherman handles and how they shift. Hope this helps.
