  • 2N winch tractor almost done
  • Took the winch tractor out for a test spin yesterday. Everything's good so just have the clean the gas tank, get some paint on the tin and mount the winch and will be ready to pull some logs.

  • Had a friend years ago who ordered a new post-war Jeep and asked about the cost of a wench. The salesman told him that that wasn't an option on the Jeep but he knew a guy out near his place who had a coupla nice lookin' daughters...

  • That looks like a really fun project. Somewhere I've seen pics of a Ferguson TE winch tractor. Very similar, but had a set of heavy forks that hinged like a tailgate in front of the winch. Sort of dug into the ground like an anchor.

  • Having skidded (as well as loading) pine logs out of the woods in east Texas back when I was a kid in the mid 50's, using the three point with a double set of grabs (log hooks) on a Ferguson 30 tractor, will you be snatching the logs with the winch and then back out of the woods with the load - just curious since I see it appears that your three point is locked out?

BTW, the 2N sure is nice looking, even w/o the tin; (being a retired fire chief and fire marshal however, I'm not overly fond of your temporary fuel tank setup, ha!).

  • The winch will be used to get the logs off the mountain down to the trail where I can get at them with my 4000 to skid them out.
Last time I logged it they couldn't get the skidder up there so they used a cat D6 with a winch to pull the big stuff out.
Yes, I'll be using a snatch block

  • You're pretty handy there Kirk. That thing looks like it will do the job. Be safe my friend.

You will have to put up another YouTube video on skidding logs.

  • Do I see a hi-line in your future between the woods and the "mill"? LoL

  • No line or mill. Good stuff gets harvested and skidded out and sent to the mill. The rest, tops and slash I skid out and use for firewood.

  • I would not use it with a winch unless I had a way to anchor the tractor. I would not leave it in gear and use a winch. chain the other end to a tree.

  • The front bumper gets chained to another tree.

  • Re: 2N winch tractor almost done
  • What size winch are you going to use? Like the chaining the bumper to a tree idea.

  • It certainly looks like it has enough weight for the job. Looks very good.

  • Now that I see the rar and see the winch, definitely will do some pulling. Impressive to say the least.

  • I use my Boomer 8N with a grapple on the loader to move my logs from my woods to the municipal brush disposal site. Logs do not seem to last long there... a lot of people who don't have gas service depend on wood for heat. My wood lot is bordered by by a river and either God or the river reduce my standing wood count each year. The last of my May 2012 30 tree loss is going to a new home tomorrow. Unfortunately, emerald ash borer is alive and well on my property . I found a couple of the D shaped holes last week. I need to start marking my ashes while I can still recognize them.

  • I have a 9000 winch I can put on the front or back receiver on my GMC 2500 pickup truck, but the Ford 871, Ford 3000, and NH Boomer 8N ALL have more testosterone than my winch. I can see that what you have is a pig of a different grunt. Kind of like comparing the old Power Wagons to the new Rams.

  • Re: 2N winch tractor almost done
  • Hmm. I use a Warn 12K on the front of my F250 with a snatch block. Cinder blocks in front of the tires to anchor it and it will outdo the 871 with pie weights and loaded rears.
