  • Starter Button
  • My 8N tractor stopped responding to the starter button so I replaced it. The tractor still won't respond so I installed a push button on the dash which works fine. Is there something I'm missing about getting the original starter button to work?

  • How did you determine it was a bad starter button? It may be you have a dead battery. If all else is correct, but battery is bad, you can jump start it with your car/truck battery. Place gear shift in NEUTRAL, fuel valve open two turns, connect one jumper cable to the starter post, then turn key switch ON. Stand clear then touch the other battery cable to a metal ground like a running board for no more than 5-6 seconds at a time. If engines cranks/starts, it's a bad battery. If battery is good, you can remove the rubber boot from the starter button contact terminal and with key ON, arc spark with a screwdriver to ground and it should crank over.

  • Broken wire from small terminal on solenoid to push button start switch by the gear shift.

  • Jim,,get the orriginal starter button working as it was orriginaly intended.Bypassing it could get yourself or a friend killed.I happened to be standing close to an 8N that had this button bypassed and the owner had a button installed on the dash when he started it (in gear)and ran over him.Lucky he survived.

  • Get a new original so it can't be started in gear.
It's a huge safety factor, and could save a life!

  • The 8N pushbutton has one wire from the start solenoid. The pushbutton should provide a ground connection for that wire when pressed. If the neutral interlock is working, the pushbutton cannot be pressed unless the transmission is in neutral. There are so few safety features on these tractors, what they do have should be considered very important. Pushbutton is east to test. Terminal floats when button is up, becomes grounded when button is pressed. Use an ohmmeter or test light. Solenoid can be tested by making sure the tractor is in neutral, then grounding the small terminal to any good ground nearby.

If the solenoid is the type that needs a switched hot to the small terminal to engage, then the correct tractor solenoid was replaced with a lookalike automotive type.
