  • HiYa Kirk-
The early 9Ns used both United Services and the Donaldson air cleaners; there was no cutoff/changeover date whatsoever. Here's the March, 1940 first 9N MPC LINK from our MANUALS forum. Scroll to the Crab/Air Cleaner page. Note the *STAR* symbols next to each part number. Now flip to the back page and it lists all the deviations by serial number and what the specific symbols signify. I'd say your 9N used the United as you have but might have used the Donaldson - I didn't look it up by your s/n.

  • Thanks for the link. I'll leave it as is. Wouldn't want to take it to a show and have someone knit pick about the air cleaner when I could have the right one sitting on other tractor. it would be easy enough to switch them out.

  • The difference between a car show and a tractor show is there is no judging at a tractor show. Yeah, we might gather' round your early 9N and make comments, but it is all about the camaraderie...I'd leave it be as it is probably right anyway. I think Ford just went to just the United Services air cleaner in 1940 anyway thru 2N production.

  • My s/n 5918 has the flat top like Harold's on a United air cleaner. The other supplier for these early years was Donaldson-they had a non removable cup on the top.

  • Thanks Steve
Both yours and Harold's numbers are close enough to mine to assume it's the original so I won't change it out. The round top was on my '40.

  • Kirk, My 7807 has the one picture here. Flat with rings. Don't know if it is original but no reason to suspect that it isn't.

  • Thanks Harold
Over the winter I'm planning to put back what was original to the tractor like smooth hubs, four spoke wheel,32's, 6 volt system, grill. Since your serial number is less than 50 from mine I'll leave the flat top cleaner. The round top one is on my '40 so I wasn't 100% sure.
The trans number is 276 away from the serial number so I'm guessing that was original to the tractor.
I picked this one up last week at a deer camp in Pa where it was used to haul firewood and drag deer out of the woods.
Here is a photo. At least it wasn't painted like an 8n

  • Kirk, bringing this one back to its original condition should be very rewarding. Have fun and keep us posted with more pictures.

  • Well if you turn that number around you wouldn't be that far off. You just got to know how to hide them. You know my friend Bill got a few over his place and every time he brings one home he tells his wife he is hiding it for me.
