  • Starter Issues
  • I am not a mechanic, more of a tinkerer and learning along the way. I've referred to this awesome site over the past 10 years for help with my tractor.

Problem: I have a 1950 8N which is a 12v conversion. The battery failed due to age and I was jumping it off until I made it to buy a new battery. It started clicking and after research, I replaced the solenoid (From TSC and I've read not to trust them), and took one wire off at at time and put on new solenoid the same way.

When I connected the charger and then turned it on, the engine began turning over as soon as I turned the charger on. NOTE that there is a key ignition and the starter button has been disconnected prior to my owning the tractor.

I thought perhaps it was the ignition so I replaced it also. The starter post that the solenoid connects to was lose, so I tightened it down. I checked all connections which seem to be good and match the photos I took prior to swapping solenoids and ignition. Now, there is no turning over of engine even with charger on even on cranking amps.

I've read post on other sites that say, there is no way to fix it and the entire harness should be replaced. Is that extreme or are there other ways to check or have you smart guys here heard of turning over without the key in and what are your suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Harry

  • Welcome to the NTC...we all started somewhere and like you learned a lot along the way. Further your knowledge by going to our HOW-TO's see LINK below -and download this excellent document JMOR created on every conceivable CORRECT way to wire these old Ford Tractors whether original 6 volt/positive ground or a modern 12-volt conversion. many 12-volt jobs are not done correctly, done because other issues are present that impedes starting/running, and thus create more problems. Bypassing the safety neutral starter switch is a perfect example. Many of us veterans also recommend you invest in the essential N-Owner manuals: the I&T F-04 Manual; the 39-53 MPC (Master Parts Catalog); and an original or copy of the 8N Owners/Operator's manual. You can find a ton of info too in the archived posts here -just type in your topic and read the old posts.

  • " NOTE that there is a key ignition and the starter button has been disconnected prior to my owning the tractor." That probably means that the standard 8N solenoid is no longer they right type of solenoid for your farmerized tractor. 8Ns need a solenoid requiring ground to small terminal in order to activate the starter. Most that use a key start switch need a solenoid that requires 12v to the small terminal in order to activate the starter. You just bought the wrong solenoid type, that's all.

  • The solenoid probably looks the same but it sounds like it is wrong. I have heard of some that are wired wrong internally. get one from a good source.
If it was mine I would would return it to original status and get the safety interlock feature.

  • Having the safety bypass is risky. Seems like the battery wire is in the wrong place.

  • Gents,

Thank you for the comments and advice. I've printed the wiring diagrams and I have been swayed to replace and reconnect the starter button. Makes sense and safety first. I'll also get a new, better solenoid, battery and work the kinks out.

  • I got run over working on a tractor with the starter safety disconnected. The tractor kind of jumped when it started in gear. Broke my left leg. Then the tractor ran away with no operator. Had to catch-up on one leg.
