  • oil in radiator
  • I have an 8n that has oil in the radiator, the guy i got it from said it needs a head gasket. there is no water in the oil, and a compression test was uniform across the four cylinders (my dad did it i do not know what the results were). i did read someplace the it was common for the 8n's to have some oil in the radiator is this true?

  • Could be something other than the head gasket. As long as there no water in the oil you should be okay.

  • While water in the oil is always a problem, oil in an N radiator is not usually a problem.

Some anti-freeze has water pump lubricant in it. Or someone might have put stop leak in there. That's oil. Because it's a flathead, no oil lines are above the head gasket. But, you could have a leak in the head gasket which will produce a sheen on the coolant thanks to combustion gases. Or, if you have a leaky head gasket & the engine is burning oil, you will get more than just a sheen of oil in the radiator.

    Any performance problems?

While a compression check can tell you that you have a gasket problem, itís not a sure thing. A leak-down test will tell you if itís leaking for sure.

Meanwhile, re-torque the head to specs: 50-55 ft lbs for nuts, 65-70 ft lbs for bolts. Torque it in the proper sequence.

  • it runs fine, has a little bit of smoke but that may be from the marvel we dumped down the cylinder's. it had sat for 4 years so before we did anything we coated the cylinders. this has straight up oil in the radiator, you can wipe black oil from the radiator neck and see it in the radiator. we haven't done a leak down test on it yet.

  • Oil is lighter than water, that's why it floats when the big EXXON tankers spill.
