  • Anti sway bar bracket under axel below rear fenders on fords
  • I have a 1954 ford naa and I own anti sway bars but I do not have the bracket that bolts bottom side of rear axel with the fender bolts. Where would be a good place to buy these bracket that should have cat.1 pins in them?
    Thanks

  • HiYa Will-
Anti-Sway Bars, technically called Stabilizer Bars, and not to be confused with STAY BARS, two completely different animals here, prevent the side to side ‘swaying’ of an implement and helps control its tracking straighter. Typical uses are with finish mowers, brush hogs, booms, and back blades. FORD/Dearborn originally made and offered them as an optional accessory item. Many farmers made their own from angle iron and flat steel bars. Today most Ford Tractor Parts supply houses sell complete kits using the angle iron bracket design. You get two fender brackets, two sway bars, two linch pins, two check chains and sometimes the required extra length 5/8-18 bolts to mount them with. You will need longer fender bolts. It depends on your tractor model year. All 9N, 2N, and early 8N’s used 5/8-18 x 5-9/16’ long hex head bolts. By mid 8N production, fenders were changed to include a square punched hole to allow the use of a carriage bolt, and rear axle fender bosses now also had a square hole to accept them as well –a carriage bolt won’t fit into a round hole due the square shoulder. You will need longer bolts, 6-1/2”. Since the industry does not produce fine thread carriage bolts any longer, you will have to purchase 5/8-11 x 6-1/2 long ones, lockwashers, and 5/8-11 hex nuts for your NAA. Original brackets pop up all the time -check ads and the popular auction sites. There is also a proper procedure on how to install them in our How-To’s forum.

  • I forgot to mention that Dennis Carpenter makes the special carriage fender bolts, exact-as-original, as part number 355310-KIT SEE LINK BELOW. Original carriage bolts were 5/8-18 NF x 6.12" L so these should work with stabilizer brackets and keep tractor original. Original hex head bolts were 5-9/16" long so I'm thinking these carriage bolts may work fine. You may want to call and ask first or call Derek at Just8Ns as he knows for sure and they sell the DC parts as well. The DC kit includes 4 of each : special carriage bolts; 5/8 Lockwashers; and 5/8-18 Hex Nuts. HTH...
