  • 841 Update - Starter?
  • Hello,

I posted a few weeks ago about my 841 not starting. Engine died because it was cold and I didn't have enough throttle.

Tried to restart it and got nothing but a click. Was time for a new battery anyway, so I bought one. Still nothing but a click. Gauges and lights worked, but when I restored the tractor I didn't replace the battery cables. Posted here asking for suggestions and several thought it was bad ground, so I replaced the battery cables and the lead from the solenoid to the starter.

Still get the click. I put the tester on the starter side of the solenoid and it's showing 7+ volts. This is a 12v conversion, so I my question is: could the solenoid have some kind of resistor to reduce the voltage to the starter or is the solenoid bad? The starter smokes when I push the start button, which makes me confused as to whether this is a bad solenoid or a fried starter.

If it's the starter, is there an appreciable difference between the one sold by Just8ns and the one at NAPA, or AutoZone? NAPA would be cheaper for me since I wouldn't have to pay shipping to the house and shipping back on the core.

    Ideas?

  • You may have a locked starter. You have described the way to not repair the problem.Never throw parts at a problem.

" I put the tester on the starter side of the solenoid and it's showing 7+ volts. "

Your starter sleeps with the fishes.

Do NOT buy a new starter. Have yours rebuilt.

Iíve been working on old cars, trucks & tractors now for over 50 years. Whenever possible, I get OEM component parts rebuilt. Given the high probability that any new component part purchased for an N tractor is made somewhere overseas w/o adequate quality control, chances are very good that you will be disappointed. If you do not have a local rebuild shop, give these guys a call for a quote & shipping info:

    Automotive Manufacturers Inc
    2400 N Lombardy St Richmond, VA 23220
    (804) 321-6861

They do mail order work. They rebuild carbs, clutches, pressure plates, water pumps, alternators, generators, starters & reline brakes.

  • One more question: can you remove the oil filter without draining the oil from the engine?

Yes, but if you are looking for clearance to remove the starter, I just take the carburetor off.

  • Awesome. Thanks.

I ordered the rebuild kit from Just8ns. Looked up a how-to. Doesn't seem too difficult, so for $23 I figured it was worth a try before paying for a rebuild. Plus, it'll give the opportunity to learn to do something else on the machine.

  • That's what I figured. Thanks.

I believe there are several shops around here that do rebuilds. Any idea what a fair price is?

  • I'm late to this party but reading this so far makes me want to ask...the engine is not locked up, is it? If you already covered that in previous post, disregard this question.

  • I don't think so. I was able to push it, in 1st gear and make it move, so it's moving in there.
