  • paint on inside of wheels on 1948 8N
  • I am restoring grandpas tractor. I am going to repaint the wheels. The inside and outside color of the front wheels is the medium gray. The outside color of the back wheels is gray but the inside is red. Is it correct or should I paint the inside gray ?

  • Ford Tractor never painted the rear wheels, only the center discs. Front 3 x 19 rims were painted. The rear rims were zinc or cad plated. Most restorers today opt to paint as re-plating is very costly. I use a special wheel paint sold by CASE/IH called 'SILVER ARGENT' -see photos below. I suggest that you don't waste your time and money using a cheap, aluminum or metallic shade paint as they will fade and rub off after two years -trust me, based on experience.

ORIGINAL 28 x 9 FORD/KELSEY-HAYES HAT RIMS; restored by Tim Daley:

FYI, Ford Tractor Paint Part Numbers:

    Ford Dark Gray (9N/2N) - M2888

Ford Medium Gray (8N and Up) - M-13243

    Ford Vermillion (8N Red & Up)- M2822

  • I can assure you they were not red inside when they left Ford Tractor. The other oddity is that one of my 8N's had the inside of its 16" wheels painted red when I broke them down for painting. Once I had them sandblasted clean it was obvious, just like Ford wheels have Ford logos they had IH logo and numbers stamped into them. I can only surmise that some previous owner had picked them up at IH or his local boneyard at sometime. I think I still have that 8N and is the one I use it for my daily worker.

  • HiYa Gasser-
The original FORD wheel suppler was Kelsey-Hayes, but I think you knew that. I have the same problem when typing. With my bad eyesight and fat fingers I often hit the wrong key and fail to preview my response. The original 3 x 19 FORD/KELSEY-HAYES rims were riveted. Ford soon went to the welded assembly; it may have been when Budd Wheel resumed production. Kelsey-Hayes also made the 28 x 9 hat rims, but I do not know who made the original, early 8 x 32 6-loop style and 32" Hat Rims, probably K-H as well.

  • My reference was to IH, the tractor and implement manufacturer. Their implement wheels were identical to Ford's and IH used a lot of red paint! Their wheels may have been made by KH too. I am getting better at proof reading when I have time, but I still type with one fat finger and use a tablet!
