  • spacer between or not?
  • I just repainted my 9N (implement enamel with hardener). I'm weighing putting a nylon shim between the fender and axle when bolting them on. Good idea or not? Thanx

  • Thanks for the input. I'll just put them together with nothing in there. There was a lot of rust between them when I took them apart. Just trying to be proactive, vs reactive.

  • The Rust Preventive stuff works great but you need to apply it to clean, bare metal before painting.

  • I'd just apply a good anti-rust inhibitor like Permatex Extend or equivalent on both the fender and axle boss if you are that concerned. I just don't see many fenders rusting out that point myself.

  • I understand the desire to try and stop rust from starting. Seems like nylon would not be strong enough to keep the fenders from wobbling. If they wobble, they rub paint off and rust. What did you do between the braces and fender sheet metal? That area is always the bigger problem on my tractors.

  • Never thought of putting a thin shim as you ask. Actually I think it may a great idea. Whenever metal on metal contact it seems to rust sooner then without a shim. Gasket material or nylon would be my suggestion.

  • Re: spacer between or not?
  • Why? You do have the essential manuals as an N owner, right? There were never 'shims'. Here is a LINK to our MANUALS forum for the first 9N MPC (Master Parts Catalog) from March, 1940. Scroll to the fender page. Do you see any 'shim' between fender and axle boss? I'm not seeing your purpose of adding them. What's your point? I'd spend my $$$ on something useful like points, carb kit, correct wiring harness, et al.

  • I wouldn't bother with a shim. Just more places for water to collect and rust to start.

  • You can put a shim if you want to.

  • On the N's I've done I've never found a shim between the fender and axles.Hearing stories about MR. Ford I've learned he only used what was needed.I do believe as much of moving and banging around in this area they wouldn't last long,,,but.
