  • Neighbors Ford Collection Going On The Block
  • Recently, I posted about the loss of my neighbor and friend who was also a Ford tractor collector.

Things are happening very quickly, and his collection is going on the block in a week or two.

I like the family and offered advise regarding selling and offered to help to get the tractors running prior to sale without compensation. None of the family live locally so they decided to sell all at auction as is. Sad, as none have run for 6-8 (some 10) years and a couple are stuck (probably valve guides).

Yesterday, I helped three of his non mechanically inclined sons pump up tires (all new but about 8-10 years old) and pull the tractors out of the barn for pressure washing and auction.

Compounding errors, they did not pick an auctioneer familiar with antique tractors. I have no idea where he will advertise the auction. Who knows who will show up.

I can walk to the auction and will attend but am torn about bidding. There are 3 or 4 tractors that I would have bought 10+ years ago but, at 68, I have too many tractors and do not need projects. Moreover, I do not wish to bid against friends, and friend/acquaintances may show up. That said, I expect that all will go cheap as all are non running.

    Decisions, decisions.

  • Bid on them. The higher they go the more for the family selling. Actually you will be doing a favor for those selling.

  • Thanks, Jim.

I will likely bid on one or two.

There are four that I would have been interested in 10 or 15 years ago, but I really do not need projects these days.

  • Is this Clarence Vogelgesang's collection that you're talking about?

  • Yes, Louis.

Sorry for the delay in responding. All heck has broken loose lately.

FWIW, the family changed auctioneers. The new auctioneer is sending someone mechanically inclined out to look over the tractors with hopes of getting some of them running prior to the auction.

I believe that the new auctioneer is a better choice than was the other auctioneer.

  • Sad to here they will go to auction and you are right,as non runners, they probably won't bring much.
A few years ago a friend called me and asked if I would help help get some tractors running and help him sell them. He told me he had brain cancer and they gave him less than a year to live and he didn't want to see his wife have to have everything go to auction. He offer to pay me a present from the sales. I told him I would be happen to help out but wouldn't accept any money. He had about 16 tractors. Got most running and sold before his death. I did offer to buy one of his tractors from the family after he past. They would only accept half my offer. They wanted to give me something for helping out. His son came in from California and I help sell the rest of the tractors and equipment.
The old 2n I bought from him will always reminded me of our friendship and the time we spent together working on old tractors. It will always be "Mike's tractor" I'm just taking care of it for him.

  • Where is the location and does the auctioneer have a website, advertising what for sale?

  • You're a good neighbor Dean. That's obvious.

I don't see anything wrong with you bidding on something that strikes your fancy. Heck, you have just as much right to buy one as anyone. Besides, you might enjoy having one to remember your friend by. I think that would be special.

  • Thanks, Mike.

Of course, but at my age, I do not need projects. The only reason I might buy any of these tractors (other than 1 or 2), is that someone is likely to make money doing so.
