  • Altitude Adjustment for Starting Ford 8N?
  • Recently picked up a '48 Ford 8N in Southern California (Orange County - used to work the orange groves near Disneyland) and moved it up to Northern California in the low Sierra Nevada mountains (3000 foot elevation). Tractor ran & I drove it onto the trailer in SoCal, but can't seem to get it started up here in the mountains. All I'm successful in doing is flooding the engine. I know that in flying carb equipped internal combustion engine airplanes we had to keep jockying with the fuel mixture (used similar carbs as on tractors) every time you climbed or descended in altitude. Other than "operator error" (which I've not ruled out, since its been over 15 years since I've been on any tractor, and over 50 years since I drove my grandfather's 8N), could the issue be that I need to adjust the carb for the altitude difference? Any thoughts, comments, suggestions, or jokes would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Thanks for all the useful (?) advice & suggestions. After talking to some "locals" & using the provided suggestions above, I've decided that we should make sure everything is as it should be. Have bought a complete tune up kit, will drain the fuel tank (to make sure no sediment, etc.) & start with the basics. I was looking for the simple & quick solution, but after a brief conversation with the previous owner (who admitted that he had had some trouble getting it running & on the trailer for the trip to the dealer who sold it), decided we needed to do it right.

    I will add that the one suggestion re: "attitude" adjustment was probably extraneous, since after 10 years flying helo's in the USMC, I have quite q bit of experience talking & treating cantankerous machines "nice" in order to get them to work. I only failed to bring one helo "back to the barn" & since nobody else in the squadron was brave enough to try flying it back, it was returned via flatbed truck!

  • I don't think that 3000 feet should make any real difference. You probably shook something loose like the coil connections.
    Try the basics first. Look for spark, check connections and turn off the gas if you think it is flooding.
    Make sure key is on and getting power to the coil...

  • I don't think your problem is altitude Ken unless you plan on flying your tractor.
    I live at almost 9,000 ft elevation and my 51 8N 6V will start any time I ask it too as long as I remember to turn the gas off when I park it.

  • Altitude or attitude. I had a 8N that was over the top with attitude. She's gone.

  • 3000 ft is not enough altitude from sea level not to make it run after you get it running you might have to lean it out 1/2 turn on the idle mixture and maybe the mains but you have something else going on does it try to start or pop anything?

  • So you jiggled it down the road and shook all the gunk loose in the tank. Mebbe something got into the float chamber and is keeping the float open. Mebbe you broke a filter and gunk got into the carb.....Start with that brass elbow filter at the carb and work up.
