  • 49 distributor SNAFU
  • As I was checking timing and points setting on "Pearl" our 49, I found some disheartening things...
    As I put the feeler gauge in the points opening, I noticed the contact moved...
    The one on the mounted points plate had the "little bitty round dot" contact bradded in, but NOT very well...
    SO I went to remove the points...
    When I did, I found the "Post" which holds the moveable point contact and spring assembly was also bradded to the (Bonified)"Breaker Plate" (#9) which holds the points (#10)...Which in turn doesn`t allow me to remove the points???
    I had replaced this Breaker plate some time ago with decent results in a better running tractor...
    I don`t remember IF FORD/NH or TSC was the Vendor, but Prolly was TSC...
    SO ==>
    Word to the Wise from MY experience here, DO NOT buy that cheap Chinese JUNK!!!
    I KNOW==>
    Y`all warned me too :)

    So, now I`m in the market for a GOOD Breaker(#9) Plate for Pearl...
    Where do our Gurus suggest I purchase this???

    Page 2)
    I also found the bushing on the distributor housing, worn enough to allow some play...
    There are two oil holes in the housing to allow oil to lube the cam...
    There is nothing which will allow oil to the "Cam" which has spiral slashes to move oil to lube it...

    Is this bushing available?
    It`s not listed in the parts list
    I think I wanna replace the bushing...
    Again? Where are Y`all getting your parts??
    I want GOOD parts this time ;)
    Thanks for putting up with me,

  • Congratulations. We all have to whiz on the electric fence every so often to learn a lesson.

    Get a used plate and rebuild it if it needs it. These guys should be able to help you w/ used parts:

    John Smith smith8N@att.net

    Rod Mondor at Forest Lake Tractor fltractor@peoplepc.com or 651 464

    Ken at Long Lane Tractor lltractor@embarqmail.com or 717-367-8610

    There are three ways to replace the bushings in a front distributor:

    1. Buy new bushings (part numbers 9N12120 front & 18-12132 rear). Press out the old ones, press in the new ones and ream to fit. CAUTION: do not try this unless you have a press & know how to use it. If you break the base, a new one costs $130. If you bend the tower which holds the front bushing, a new plate will cost you $30. Resist the temptation to buy a new plate; most are pot metal and the threads will wallow out about the third time you change the points.

    2. Take the new bushings and distributor to your local machine shop.

    3. Send the distributor out for bushing replacement if you do not have a local machine shop

  • Thinking back +++>>
    I replaced that Breaker plate because the bushing in the nose of it was worn out...
    Are these cam bushings available and replaceable???
    AND Looking at the parts fiche, I`ma missing the washer & ring (#s7&8)from the end of the cam...
    Thanks Dennis

  • I think if you call Just 8N's they can get the bushings and washers for you.
