  • 841 Still Not Running
  • Hello, again.

My 841 (12v) still isn't running. I cleaned the carburetor; changed the gas, and reset the points. It cranks and runs fine for a few seconds, but with a good bit of smoke, then sputters out and dies.

I assume that it has a fuel problem, but not sure how since I've cleaned the carb and when I drained the tank I did it from the fuel line and watched the flow - it was unimpeded.

Any ideas of what to do next?

  • Problem solved! It was the condenser. Had a spare that I swapped and it's running like a champ, now.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Thanks for the update. Interesting that you had good spark when you tested it as usually with a bad condenser you might get a couple good sparks but then it weakens quickly.

  • The fact that it smokes when it starts indicates it is getting too much fuel or not enough air. First check to make sure the choke is opening. Try starting it with the air cleaner tube disconnected. Sometimes a driving rain can force water into the air cleaner and overfill the oil cup in the air cleaner. This can have the same effect as the choke being closed.

  • Donít guess at the cause of the problem; guessing can get expensive. And leave you breathless chasing every guess.......it could be this, it could be that......just troubleshoot the problem and leave the guess work for buying Lottery tickets.

As soon as the tractor stops running, not 5 minutes later, check for spark and fuel.

You need to answer 2 questions before you do anything else:

With the bolt in the carb bowl removed and the gas on, will the fuel flow fill a pint jar in less than 2 minutes?

Next, get out your adjustable gap spark checker * , open the gap to 1/4", hook it up, turn the key on and crank the engine. Does the spark jump 1/4"? Post back with the answers.

And do not buy a new part for the tractor until you can answer this question: how do I know the part on the tractor is defective?

    * Don't own an adjustable gap spark checker? Buy one! Not a test light! Until then, take an old plug, open the gap 1/4" ground it to the head & look for spark. Itís not the color of the spark that counts; itís the distance it jumps.

  • Finally had a chance to do this.

Yes, the spark jumps the 1/4" gap. Yes, with the bolt out, the fuel flows enough to fill a pint jar in less than 2 minutes.

The air cleaner is clean and the air tube to the carb is clear.

I haven't bought any parts, other than carb cleaner :).

What's next? Thanks for the help.
