  • Positive Ground Location
  • I have noticed at time when I start my 2N that the ground wire (+) gets warm where it's attached to the bolt holding the dash cover to the hood. Is this the factory location?
The wire is short so it can't go anywhere far.
    Thanks
    Tony

  • To answer your initial inquiry, I believe that after serial number *9N-12500* the battery ground strap bolted to the rear hood to dash bolt which is 5/16". earlier 9N straps fastened to the air cleaner with a 7/16 bolt, I think, I'd have to look at mine. I have new DC battery cables for my early 9N project but haven't got that close yet to installing them. I know some recent early 9N restorers, Steve Dabrowski for one, have run into issues with the battery cables. There may be some info in the archives here.

  • We're talking 6-volt/positive ground, right? Get your MPC's out Tony. We have some in our MANUALS forum for free download -see LINK below. The N's used a HD braided strap for the ground connection. Dennis Carpenter makes and sells the correct strap, p/n 9N-14301, 5-1/2" long. The positive battery post should be closest to the back of dash. While you're at it, may as well verify the cable to starter switch. It is p/n 9N-14300-C. With a 6-volt system, you need the HD thick as your thumb cables to handle the amperage. It sounds like you probably have 12-volt battery cables, a lot smaller diameter than what is needed for 6-volt. What do you mean by 'dash cover'? The hood fastens to the dash, there is no other cover.

  • I use the braided ground straps for the ground. Do you have a wire ot strap? What size is the wire if you are using a wire? In any case it should not get hot, either too small corrosion or loose connection. nothing says you cannot use a longer strap.

  • It's not a braided wire strap. I'll give that a try.
But where did the factory ground go to from the battery?
    Thanks.

  • Mine is attached behind the dash.

  • ANY heat means amperage loss... be sure it is shiny and tight...
