  • 12 holes in wheel center?
  • Picked up a mid-'39 9n and the wheel centers that bolt to the axle has two sets of mounting holes, so here are 12 mounting holes not six. Wondering what this is all about? Is it factory, or a farmerized thing for some unknown purpose? The rims are 28" not 32".

  • Or maybe for dual wheels??

  • Re: 12 holes in wheel center?
  • dual wheels would make 8 holes.
pie weights would make 12 holes.

used to have a picture of a 9N with pie weights but can't find it now.

  • In addition to Tim's possibilities I'll add steel mud paddles withe extra holes being for mounting bolts that could stay on the tractor. Just a WAG on my part.
I also considered some kind of dual wheel attachment but that might be a bit weird. You have an interesting puzzle.

  • You may be on to something here. The Tip-Toes were an aftermarket item made for the 9N/2N rear wheels. Ford never made them, so I suspect they never put the extra holes in the center discs either. I'd suspect the dealer who sold the tip-toes did or a Ford shop. I don't know but seems like they might bolt up to the existing six center disc bolts, maybe not. One would have to measure the bolt hole pattern of both to conclude.

  • Looks like these are bolted to the outside diameter though, not the center disc. Interesting, we never did determine the extra set of bolt holes in the front steel wheels did we?

  • Re: 12 holes in wheel center?
  • Nope, not a farmerized thing. Like AL(CT) says, two sets of bolt holes were used, one for the early 6-Loop Style Rims and the second for the newer Hat Rims. They were used up until the loop rims were discontinued, but part books do not reflect when that change was made. BTW -if anyone has a set of 32" wheel centers to sell with the 12 holes, contact me.

  • Re: 12 holes in wheel center?
  • Sorry, I wasn't very clear... the six extra holes are at the center where the wheel center mounts to the axle, not where the rim mounts to the center. They are evenly spaced between the existing mounting holes and are the same diameter. Any guesses?

  • Tom-
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the center discs ever had two bolt patterns, at least I've never seen any. The only thing I can think of is someone added them to mount a pie weight center plate onto or a relative facsimile.

  • Re: 12 holes in wheel center?
  • Early 28" & 32" were that way. Both very early rims had the cast lugs, later the hat rims. I also have one 28" center disk with 12 holes. One set of 6 holes has a slight flat along the outer diameter. I would assume to allow clearance for the cast lugs.
If anyone wants/needs a 28" center disk with 12 holes, let me know.
