  • Upper lift arm removal
  • Looks like I will be taking a road trip soon to see Kirk and picking up a rear differential for my '53 NAA. I have to start pulling mine apart and get it ready for the red, one of the thing I will need from mine are the upper lift arms. Who can tell me how to get them off? Thank you.

  • I wish you well if yours were like mine - They came off but with great difficulty.

  • My tale of woe was similar. Decided the arms had to come off because the bushings were completely worn out. I used heat, a really big gear puller, and two big hammers to gradually "slide" mine off about 1/1000 of an inch at a time. They didn't actually "slide" until each was more than half way off the splines. If either arm was being replaced for any reason, I'd have cut most of the way thru the hub, and then split it with a cold chisel.

  • i enjoyed reading your Tale of Woe lol, the rear diff i am picking up has no upper lift arms on it. after reading the Tales Of Woe from a slew of different forums i may, 1) purchase a set of new lift arms and install them and leave mine be or 2) like Kirk emailed me and said just pull my entire top plate and use mine. if i choose #2 i will have to do a little work as mine drops with a load on it.

  • The arms just slide off. You may need a torch and a big hammer.

  • I don't have a torch so I took my top cover to an implement repair and they pressed the arms off. When one broke loose, it sounded like a gun shot. Not an easy thing to get loose.

My 8N has one arm that has been welded back together. I mention that because they can be broken apparently.

  • Not sure what it would take to break one. Iíve really pressed, heated and hammered. Seems like I had one that just would not move. Had to scrap it.
