  • Distributor dust cover
  • Finished the distributor rebuild on my 57 960, and is
working fine. Now on to my 52 8N distributor. I pulled
it last night, and doing some research, believe it
should have a dust cover under the cap also. It is
serial number 498815. My question is: Are the covers
for the 8n thru 55-64 years the same or different?
I needed to finesse the new one on my 960 to get it to
seat properly. My 8N has not had one for years that
I recall and may explain some running issues if the cap
is not seated at the right height.
Appreciate any info someone share on this issue.
    Thanks

  • Near as I could tell the 53 dust cover and gasket is different from the dust cover that was in the 51-52 side mount 8N. This is based on the replacement dust cover I bought that was supposed to fit "51 and up". No way. The 53 dust cover will go in there but it takes the index slot, so the only thing holding the distributor cap in the right place are the two spring clamps. That is just wrong. The original 51-52 dust cover was all plastic and fits down inside the distributor body so the cap still locks into the index slot. I could not find the correct dust cover, so I made a mold from two broken ones and cast a new one using a two-part urethane. The mold is silicone, so it was easy to peel the finished dust cover out. It isn't black but it works as it should.

  • So if I understand you right, since the dust cover would go
down into the distributor, using it without ( as in a leisure
working tractor ) a cover, the cap would fit in the right
height position, keyed to the distributor, held down by the
spring clips, not able to rotate on the distributor.

  • That is correct. The 8N distributor cap fits correctly with or without the dust cover. Some of the parts manuals don't show a dust cover in the 8N distributor.

  • Dust cover and neoprene O ring on both 51 and 52 8Ns.

No issues of any kind but one must finesse the dust cover to seat properly allowing proper seating of the distributor cap.

Both dust cover and O ring are needed to establish proper seated dimension of the cap.

Yes, always remove the rotor spring clip before removing the cap.

  • My side mount 50 has the dust cover, no problems at all. Like Bruce says, watch the clip when you take the dust cover off. I haven't lost mine YET!

  • Check the parts book to see if the dust cover cap is the same as orig cap. Should be same for 55-64 too.

  • Yea, the dust cap was retro-fitted on the 8N sidemounts due to premature points failure.

Problem is, I've never got one to fit correctly with a gasket in the cap. Maybe they are just a bit off, but the choice seems to be gasket or dust cover.

And you will lose the rotor clip pulling the dust cover off if you are not really careful!

My experience also. I've run a '51 without one for several years. Points do not fail any more often than in my 601 which does have a dust cover.
