  • Dirt plowing with the sherman step up
  • Any of you guys plowing with your step ups.
When I go to plow days I plow in second gear with my '46 2n. Don't mind plowing in second but I always get some guy on my a** with a bigger more powerful tractor that want to speed the plow. It's no big deal I just let him pass me before we hit the next row.
I snowplowed about 3" yesterday on the '40 9n with the backblade and when done parked it in the snow. noticed some oil under the tractor, hard to miss in the snow anyway a quick dab on the cotter pin with my finger and the smell of hydraulic oil tell me that the input shaft seal is leaking. I pulled some logs this season and my '40 and it runs so good that I was going to take it to plow days this spring. Now since I have to split it anyway to put a new seal in and cause I've got a couple of step ups laying around I was thinking about putting one in.

  • Ford Ns are plowing fools in 2nd gear, by design. I'm guilty of using the Combo Sherman as a kid. I would use step up 1st where possible.
I've also tangled with ground left unturned for 20 years. Ugh! Step down 1st was a hard pull. Dried clay is too. For that you have to watch the moisture content.
Years ago for plow day we had a kid with a Farmall A single bottom "flying" across the field, passing everyone. But, he was only plowing about 3" deep. That messes up the set for tractors plowing about 7". When he got straightened out, he could not pass anyone.

  • 2nd Gear is right for pulling a 2-bottom plow with these N's. Don't worry about the guys who want to go faster and pass you while flippin' ya the bird -they're probably late for work. Same with drivers in the morning on the roads.

  • Dad's '46 had a step up... we used it ALL the time rather than yanking the throttle wide open.... I believe some folks would just as soon having ROARING, but I don't run fast when I can walk... and that is why I like the step ups.

    Just do it!! :-)
