  • Spark checker
  • My stock Jubilee is hard to start but always starts. I purchased an adjustable spark checker and it jumps a 3/16" gap but will not jump a 1/4" gap. What did I do next?

  • The primary cause of a weak spark is a weak battery. Charge it & check it per tip # 49.

While it's charging, dress the points, put a dab of lub on the cam and set the gap: .025. Don't lose the little clip under the rotor.

Then, because that will only take 10 minutes, remove both battery cables and clean the post, ends & connections bright & shiny.

If that doesn't work, post back.

  • I have a year old battery and it had a cheap HF battery tender on it all week. I checked the battery with a hydrometer 4 balls floated and one did not, it said it was 75% charged. but a good battery monitor on it and a check battery light came on. I will fix this problem first.

  • Wide and blue spark on time, 3/16" should be enough. Orangish, cold weather, moderately heavy oil, an 80% battery maybe not so much.

Coil, most likely, or corroded terminal leads at the cap after low battery assuming all other components, fuel supply, timing, plugs, cap and leads etc. are in good order.
