  • Valve seat replacement
  • I own a 1949 Ford 8N for the last couple of years and decided this past Feb. to tear it down completely and replace just about everything. Because of sever pitting in all of the exhaust and some intake valve seats I want to replace them all with new ones if itís possible. If so, what is the proper way to remove the valve seats?

    Regards,

  • Are the seats too far gone to be refaced?

95% of the time, valve seats are refaced by grinding a new face on the seat. ...This is a common procedure which can be done with the engine in the tractor, but does require specialized tools.

If the engine is out of the tractor, most automotive machine shops and some repair shops will have the tools required.

  • Thanks everyone. Went back to the shop this morning after seeming the valve seats on 8N tractor website. After rolling the bottom of the motor up to get a look, it was pretty clear what needed to be done. Machined a tool out of bronze round stock with a pilot and knock out all 8 in about 5 minutes.

  • When I overhauled one of mine , I took the blok to a shop and had it inspected for cracks and had them replace the valve seats. used all new valves and hand lapped them.
