  • Can I ask a question about a foreigner??
  • If not then shame on me. I got the 8N out today. Nice sunny day. A neighbour stopped to talk. He has an International 484 Deisel. Recently while pushing ahead with the bucket the clutch went to the floor and stayed there. If idling slowly he can get it into first gear and it will drive. He asled two questions which I could not answer......is it likely a throw out bearing? Does he have to split the tractor to change the bearing? I told him to inspect for any possible mechanical failure other than the clutch. Ideas?

  • I agree with JMOR. About 40+ years ago my 8N would not dis-engage when depressing the clutch. After breaking the tractor in half 3 times and spending over $100 for a new clutch plate, pressure plate and throw out bearing, I was directed to the external linkage. BINGO! I left the new parts in the tractor and they are still there. The "old" parts are in the barn somehere, I think, along with the broken link as a reminder.

  • But before the split, verify all external clutch linkage.

  • I agree to check all outside linkage before doing a split. I didn't mention that (and I should have) because Dave already told him to check that. But anyway, yes, check that first..

  • Throw out bearing or the levers inside would be my guess. Could be pressure plate but I doubt it. I would replace it and the clutch plate while I was in there. Without looking at it I would say their is a 99% chance that it has to be split. JMHO

  • Thanks to all for the advise. Yes, he has checked all external linkage. So, it is something internal. I do appreciate the help. Dave
