  • Paint & Decal Question
  • I'm just about ready to paint the 58 861 and I wondered if there is a different red orange paint that should be used on the engine due to its temperature variations. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also, the only decal in decent shape was the on the inside of of the hood above the gas tank (where the original paint is dirty but decent). I'm torn between cleaning the decal/underside and preserving the original vs. striping and reapplying a new matching decal from George Bradish. A penny for any preservationists thoughts. Thanks.

  • A black car sitting in the sun can easily have higher surface temperature than a tractor engine. Standard automotive primers and paints should be perfectly ok on a tractor engine. I have not noticed any difference in the paint finish on my tractors, and I don't use any paint additives. The engine surface just doesn't get that hot.

Underhood temperatures for a car will get much hotter than for an exposed tractor engine. Automotive engine coatings are usually advertised for around 500 degrees.

High temp coatings advertised for up to 1500 degrees should be sufficient for things like exhaust manifolds, but I have not found ANY rattle can or brush on coating that does not immediately fail when the tractor is worked hard. Ceramic coating may be the only long-term solution for an exhaust manifold (and the first foot or so of exhaust pipe), but ceramic coating is too expensive for my budget.

  • Would you outline your paint procedure after the prep work is done for the sheet metal and engine of your tractors? I have health issues and don't want to aggravate them and I do have the ppe. Thanks

  • Use the same paint on the engine. You can use high temperature paint on the manifold. It will burn off in places.
