  • 641 governor spring and throttle arm
  • I happen to notice my governor spring was broke. Tractor had a problem idling low so I thought maybe that was the problem.
Being cheap I put on a spring that was similar in size from Lowes. Still wont idle low.
I decided to put the correct spring on and still wont idle low. However with the correct spring on the throttle lever will not even stay in a low position, wants to jump to high idle like the spring is too strong.
Engine starts and runs great, just does not have a nice low idle.

  • If you can used fingers on carb throttle arm (not rod) to slow it (until next time you move throttle), then it will likely be a worn throttle shaft. The reason is that when throttle shaft wears, the throttle plate is pulled against the throat on one side before it can properly close, but with fingers, you can reposition it to center & close it.

  • I have the same issue with my 601. The governor spring wasn't broken though. Got the speed down from 900 to 600. Must have had it apart 3 times and adjusted linkages. Still needs to be slower. A real puzzle. Good luck with it!
