  • Compression test
  • Ok, woke up this morning and decided to start all over from the begining. Did compression test. Results:1- 110 psi in two pops dry. Wet- 140 first pop. #2- 110psi all 5 pops to get there dry, 120 psi in 2 pops wet. #3- 105 3 pops, 110 2 pops wet. #4- 110 2 pops dry, 115 2 pops wet. Not the best but should still run fair. Don't smoke.
Hadn't thought of backfireing for collapseing float but I can it happening. Good thought.but don't recall any backfireing but possible. And blowing air thru the inlet hole, 2 reasons that couldn't happen, 1: the thought of blowing 100psi into the carb makes me shudder!!! 2: the way I am running my fuel line at the carb end is sort of permanent till this runs good. I have excellent fuel flow from tank all the way out the bowl drain.
Dist. freshly rebuilt, seems to be doing good. Timeing at 4 btdc. When it runs it starts as soon as you hit the button.
Sorry this got so long. I'll go mow some lawn and contemplate for an acre or so.. Rusty

  • Can we assume you have a 2N? I don't see anything wrong with those compression values do you?

  • Yes I have 2n. BUt this is an 8n 1950. 12v. Sorry.
I don't have a problem with the compression readings. Kinda knew they would be ok. But due process calls for a test and knowing for sure what going on inside helps me feel better. I know it is worth my time. Hopefully I will get back on it this afternoon. Rusty

  • Yeah, the 4 BTDC had me thinking side mount 8N so had to ask. Are you having issues with the tractor now?

  • It is back together. Set up a temp. fuel tank and changed exhaust to get the stack out of my way. Removed carb. Changed needle and seat with a new one and reset the float. Will do more after I get back from town later today. Fingers crossed!!!
These old girls take time and $$ and patience to get them defarmerized or refarmerized in some cases and dependably.
Running a stack exhaust cause steering box leaks onto exhaust and this is dry land wheat country. One spark or heat from pipe and many acres turn black real fast!!! Scary fast!!! Will change back to stock when leak is fixed. Which is next on the list when she gets running again. Box feels good but needs some adjusting and deleaked.
Same process as the 2n went through over the years.
    Have a good day!!! Rusty
