  • Hello and thank you for helping out. I'm not sure what info is relevant, so I'll include all I can think of regarding a lift problem I'm having with an 8N that I just bought. The arms raise and lower fine without an implement attached. With one attached though, they don't raise at all or only slightly at the end of the touch control range. Adjusting the plate on the side of the tractor below the seat made only a slight difference. The fluid was milky and has been changed using the 90W mineral type. The new fluid shows a slight sign of water and some air bubbles. This improved while the tractor sat for a few days. There is a small, steady, drip from the cylinder above. Changing the fluid didn't make a difference in performance. I removed the bolt holding the two halves of the quadrant together so the touch lever could be moved past the normal range. If the lever is moved an inch or so past the bracket, the implement will raise and hold while I stand on it. It seems it may be a worn linkage or part causing this. Is there some other testing I can do to determine the cause? Thank you!

  • There is a video for sale and can be found at Steiner Tractor parts among other sources. It is put together by Dan Gingell and is fairly comprehensive. Should help. Normal cost is about 25-30 dollars

  • HiYa Paul-
If you have bubbles coming from the oil in the sump, the pump is cracked. The milky oil is an indicator it got contaminated with water. If tractor was sitting outside for while, it is possible it got in that way. Then, if water froze and tractor hydraulic lift was attempted to operate, the pump may have been cracked then. The oil oozing from the cylinder means its time to replace all that too. You are in store for a complete overhaul it looks like. Simply adjusting the touch control quadrant won't fix any of those issues. Hydraulic pump R & R isn't a difficult task, just time consuming and be sure to get a helper to lift the top cover on and off. Get your I&T F-04 Manual out and read this document to start with...

  • Glad I asked, Tim. I thought the bubbles were coming from air being trapped somewhere during the fluid change. It did improve after a few days of sitting. Since the lift works ok when the touch control is rigged to be able to go beyond the normal range in the quadrant, I thought the problem was a worn linkage or part. Looks like I've got some work to do. In addition to the manual and other reading, can you recommend a video or slideshow that shows the rebuild process? Thanks very much for the diagnosis!

Sounds like you are on the right track to me!
