  • Clutch allignment tool
  • I just had the motor rebuilt by a local shop for my '40 9n. I had brought it to them out of the tractor and stripped down, including having the flywheel and clutch off. The clutch was fine before, just needed an internal overhaul. My question is, can I simply bolt the clutch back on and reinstall the engine, or do I need a special clutch alignment tool? Thanks for the advice.

  • See tips 12 & 59.

Check the ring gear & replace it if need be.

    Have the flywheel resurfaced.

I'd have the clutch & p/p rebuilt. And I'd replace the t/o & pilot bearings & front transmission seal while I was in there.

Use the main shaft as your clutch alignment tool.

  • Be sure to get the flywheel refaced before re-assembly.

  • You need to align the clutch with the pilot bearing and the splines of the clutch when you bolt down the release plate. Otherwise you will never get the trans to line up and go together. You can get an alignment tool or use a input shaft from a trans. Some clutch sets come with a tool or the supplier will loan you one. You should also look at and or replace your pilot bearing while you are in there.

  • You need an alignment tool, but the trans input shaft will work. You should replace the front trans seal while you have it split anyway.
