  • Ford 2 n won't start today but yesterday she did??
  • I have a 1945 ford 2n it hasn't been charging since I bought it on Sunday.
However my question today is why won't she start today when she started fine yesterday after I charged battery up. It has a 20 year old 12 volt convention kit I also had alternator off yesterday and had it tested at putting out 14.6. Volts I put alternator back on yesterday she started fine several times inspite not charging battery when installed. So why won't she start today when she was starting yesterday ????
I would like to get it charging while running but first I would like to get her atleast starting and running.
I do have gas at carb cas I removed bold drain at bottom of carb and I have nice steady flow of gas.
Thinking of looking at points any other help would be helpful thank you.

  • I have an 8N that someone converted poorly and left a mess of the wiring. I cut every single wire off the tractor and completely rewired it in about an hour with about $20 worth of wire.

  • I like your reply, can you send diagram or schematic of how to retire a 12 volt system on a ford 2n?
I am limited on electrical knowledge, and diagrams or photos would help greatly.
    Thank you everyone.

  • Ford 2 n
12 volt system still not charging.
1 I have charged battery with battery charger
    2. I had alt tested at car parts store a bench test putting out 14.6 volts
    3. I put on a new in dash volt meter wired same as the lot amp meter was wired.
    4. I also have been testing system with my portabale volt meter system is not charging
    5. I ran a by pass wire from alt output bolt to selinoid battery side
    6. I took a jumper wire from post 1 and 2 of alt no change
    7. I put jumper wire from alt output bolt to 1 post no charging
I was told conversion to 12 volts was done 20 years ago not sure if it was done correctly or not or if something is not working properly
    What shall I do next?????

  • "3. I put on a new in dash volt meter wired same as the lot amp meter was wired."

Voltmeter should be wired + to switched side of ignition switch, - to good ground.

  • Sounds like you may have had it flooded yesterday. Very difficult to start.

What alternator do you have? One wire or three?

Are you aware you have to increase the RPM for the alternator to start charging?

Do you have a meter or test light?

  • Re: Ford 2 n won't start today but yesterday she did??
  • Alternator is a one wire
I have a working volt meter when not running bat reads about 13 volts and when running reads about 12.8 so I feel that she isn't charging. Yes I have increased Rpms and it makes no difference.
Thank you for your advice and time.

  • If you have front dist and square coil, check the coil connection. First just jiggle the coil around and see if she fires up. If so it is the coil connection.
They all start until they don't...

  • HiYa Will-
99.98% of all non-starting/non-running issues with these old Ford N Tractors is due to some feeble attempt at switching over from 6V/POS GRN to 12V. The root cause is always because of incorrect wiring and/or incorrect and/or missing parts in the circuit. There's a right way and a wrong way to do a 12-volt conversion. The are maybe a half dozen right ways. In our HOW-TO's forum, ELECTRICAL, we have several wiring documents to help. Here is a LINK to view one very important one to download and keep in your shop - "WIRING PICTOGRAMS by JMOR". Scroll down until you find your set up and scrutinize that it matches what you have on your tractor with no deviations. The first thing you need to test is the battery. How old is it? Simply 'charging' it dos not mean it is a good battery. The battery must sustain a full charge under load, in order to supply the needed current for starting and running the system, whether 6V or 12V. Take the battery to a reliable starter shop or a local auto parts store to get bench tested. A correct 12V battery for your tractor should be a GRP-25 or GRP-35 AG type, not an automotive or a Deep Cycle battery. The battery cables must be 1V type, not the heavier gauge 6V type. Is your col 6V or 12V? If 6V, then you need to add an in-line 1 OHM ceramic resistor as shown in the PICTOGRAMS. A 12V/NEG GRN battery, with an alternator, and a 12V coil does not use the extra resistor. Whether using a 6V coil or a 12V coil, you MUST use the OEM Ballast Resistor in the circuit. The original round can cutout is taken out of the circuit altogether; no longer used. You said you have fuel flow so that leaves the electrical system as the next possible root cause, and, in my opinion, the most likely. Your wiring and maybe a component or two are not right in my opinion. I'd also get the ammeter replaced -you want to know if you are charging the battery or not. Don't make guesses at what 'might be' the problem. Checking the wiring connections is fine, but use the right tool -crimping wire connections with pliers is not the right way. Start with these tips and report back with your findings. It is also recommended that you get the essential manuals for the Ford-Ferguson 9N/2N tractor. The I&T F-04 Manual; the '39-'53 MPC; and the 9N/2N Service Manual are good starts.

  • Re: Ford 2 n won't start today but yesterday she did??
  • Thank you for all the great info!!!!!
Today she started whereas yesterday she would not and we did nothing to it from yesterday till when she started today.
Back on the no charging issue today I by pasted the wire from alt. To bat side of selinod with a jumper cable but it made no difference on my volt meter.
Secondly today I replaced the weathered non readable amp meter on the dash with a nice round in dash mounted volt meter in place of amp meter. Still no charging I was hoping that replacing the amp meter might have been the non charging issue I was wrong.
I have loosened and greased with dialectical grease most of the electrical connections that I can see on this ford 2n with the 20 year old 12 volt conversion.
The lights are disconnected and I just don't know what do next. I am not an electrical wisord, but I have been operating these ford tractors for 50 years.
What should I do to isolate the non charging issue???
    Thank you

  • Charging issue:

    1. Make sure the fan belt is tight

    2. With round in dash volt meter, connect all wires from ammeter to positive post on volt meter. Ground the negative side

    3. How is your one wire alternator configured?

If it has a plastic dummy plug on #1 and #2 pins remove the plug and check for a bridge wire across the 2 pins. If so, replace the plug

If no bridge across #1 to #2, or if no plug, or if #2 is connected to output stud, place a jumper across 1 and 2 or put a jumper from output to #1 pin. Start engine. If it now charges your alternator was not being excited.

If this makes it charge you could add a wire with a diode or "idiot lite" from output of ignition switch to #1 pin. You can leave this wire in place, but do not leave the direct jumper in place

  • Re: Ford 2 n won't start today but yesterday she did??
  • There is only one wire a red one to the bolt on alt the other two post are bare nothing hooked up to them.
So you are saying I should take a wire and conect the two bars post and see if it Charges?
I think you might be on to something.
    Any help is greatly appreciated

  • Will,

Think you have possibly compounded your problem. A voltmeter must be wired in parallel while a ammeter must be wired in series. Sending you a direct email.

  • Take a test light and make sure you're getting power to the coil. I have a '44 that when you turn the key switch on all the way, no power. Turn on all the way than back off a hair and it fires right up. Might also check the points.

  • Re: Ford 2 n won't start today but yesterday she did??
  • The lights are not hooked up.
The amp meter on dash is unreadable and not working.
I did mess with the wires at the ballist resistor trying to squeeze to connectors tighter with a pliers because they felt a little loose.
