  • EARLY 9N VOLTAGE REGULATOR -REPOP
  • There is a new, reproduction early 9N voltage regulator on ebay right now. It isn't listed as such, only as a '38 Ford unit. This is the same seller who I bought a half dozen from several years ago also listed as such then too. What he didn't know and I did tell him was that this VR was also the one used on the early 9N Tractors using the 9N-10000-A small, 2-wire/2-brush generator. These were only used with first 9N-A generator. His are new solid state units but are acceptable to use for anyone doing an early 9N restoration. There are a few precautions to take, but I know of two fellers that are using them in their early 9Ns with no problems. Now, usual disclaimer here -I don't know this seller, but have bought from before as stated. I just thought I'd share as I know a few guys have asked me where to get one. Here is one of them on my 1939 Ford-Ferguson 9N:

  • I'm assuming you got a better price than $2400 for half a dozen voltage regulators.

  • The 38 Ford used a round cutout on early production then switched to an oval 2 rate relay. The price is a ripoff.my 38 Ford had a rheostat that let me adjust the charge rate from the drivers seat.

  • Well, according to my data, you are partially correct. I show the round-can cutout being used thru 1938 on some vehicles with the oval VR being used on others up thru 1937 and then the square voltage regulators effective, December, 1937. The squares were used on the '38 Ford DeLuxe model car in 1938, probably a few other vehicles as well. I have been to so many car shows searching for an original that I can observe up close but every vehicle I come across ha had a 12-volt switch over job performed and thus no VR in the circuit. The '38 and '39 VR were basically the same, so I don't why the seller says "for police vehicles with radios' or whatever. They were the same unit pretty much inside and out. The guy manages to sell these so whatever a restorer is willing to pay is the key.

  • There is a guy that has a couple originals for sale every year at Hershey (the antique car show and flea market) and I refuse to pay his ridiculous price, which goes up $25 or more each year, but never has sold one. He said one time "They'll have to wait until my stuff is sold at auction after I am gone." I almost told him "I am waiting for the auction," but managed to keep my mouth shut, for once.
