  • Proof meter reads too high
  • At half throttle or a little more my proofmeter reaches it's maximum reading. This hasn't really been an issue because I haven't really used it with any PTO driven equipment. That's about to change and I'd like to know I have the RPMs it the right neighborhood. Can this be fixed or do I just need to replace it?

  • I knew you guys would have the answer. It turns out that I have an NAA proofmeter. Now I know what I have to do to fix it.

    Thanks guys.

  • Amazing how once you have some solid factual information diagnosing the problem becomes really easy.

  • Proofmeters didn't come on 8N's until mid-1950 and folks used pto driven equipment just fine. See tip # 69.

  • That's about what I figured, BUT I'm an engineer and I like numbers when I can get them. LOL

  • JMOR may have hit the nail in your case, but I also remember a few years ago there was a batch of aftermarket replacement 8N proof meters that were being sold cheap because they looked pretty, and seemed to work, but did not measure accurate RPM or hours.

  • If someone installed the NAA meter on an N, it will read 56% too high. Proofmeters are known for being short lived. Difficult to take apart & might not be able to re-calibrate if successful at opening it. Just above the hours counter, the words "Hours at 1580 RPM" appear on an 8N meter and "Hours at 1515 RPM" appear on NAA meter.
