  • '48 8N stripped axle threads
  • Well, I discovered that the threads on my right axle are stripped. Hub was bad so I bought a new one. Tried the two piece Tisco lock nut and ended up stripping the rest of the threads. New hub was nice and tight. Rather than spend $200 to have a new one shipped I want to see what you all think about having a local machine shop re-thread it if possible. I assume it would be cheaper. What would be the next size down and where can I get a suitable replacement axle nut? Is the slightly smaller threaded shaft a bad idea? Thanks in advance.

  • Where are you located? I have a couple of good used 48 style axles from when I changed mine over to the later style with inner seals.

  • I ordered the axle MPN#8N4235C. Will these require inner seals or not fit a '48?

  • I'm in southwest ohio. I went ahead and bought a new axle but I was unaware there was a later style specifically for the tractors with inner seals. Will the later style axles not work on my early '48?

  • When they added the inner seal about 1950 they added a machined diameter on the axle for the seal to run on and an area in the cast axle housing for the seal. All the replacements are the later style axle and will work in the older ones also.

  • Iíve seen several with the shaft threaded a smaller size. The last time I purchased a new axle it was 90 bucks. That was several years ago.

  • I would go with a new shaft, but check for shop rates and get a firm quote, you might find it cheaper to replace it. check ebay, new ones less than 100 plenty of used ones also.
