  • I found this ad on CraigsList last night and will be going to look at it today. It is a 1964 Ford 4000 gas, and appears to be a decent machine. Ad says it only has a small power steering pump leak, but, we'll see what 'small' is. I've seen 800's and 900's listed for around the same price so I had to check it out and to my surprise, an added bonus is all the extra implements that come with it. I need a new brushhog and the early Ferguson 2-bottom plow is a good find alone. Lastly, it says NO SELECT-O-SPEED, 12 Forward and 3 Reverse. My 4000 brochure says SOS or Dual Range 8 Speed were options so is this what he means? I'd rather not deal with an SOS anyway.

  • The missing wheel weights may have shown up, also the "Thumb Area".

  • I don't know your area but I would probably have gone to 3200 for the three items. But that apparently would not have bought it.

  • People are real big on how well something has been running, or how many new parts it has when they set the selling price. There's a '72 Ford 3000 Diesel for sale about 2 miles from my house. I could drive it home, but the guy is asking $7000 with no implements. I could see a big hole in one rear tire just driving by. I stopped to take a picture, but didn't bother to get out.

  • Looks like a good deal, but there are always hidden problems when we start working on anything. Hard to go completely wrong with all the implements included.

  • The rear tires look pretty worn, so depending on how much dirt work you plan on doing you might be needing rear tires. The clutch pedal looks like it is adjusted to be higher than what you usually see on a four speed trans.

  • That's an 841/Sherman combination equivalent. No live PTO.

Will be about 46-48 PTO HP.

  • I just went back to your post and viewed the pics. Notice the 4 speed shift lever and the Sherman shift lever. SoS.

  • Yes, it appears to have a Sherman Over/Under - I didn't see that shifter at first til it was pointed out. I always liked the 4000 and this isn't that bad, having no live PTO and all, but a bit overpriced I thought even with the extras. Seems odd the seller didn't call it as is -with a Sherman instead of '12 forward/ 3-reverse speeds'. The two-tone blue and off white hood -must have been the early ones prior to '64. I think that is when they came out with the newer ones, 8-sp or SOS only options and paint was all blue except for white fenders as shown in my brochure.

  • The factory power steering is worth 1000$ by itself. SoS.

  • The more squared-off looking hood started in 1965, and that is when the hood changed to blue. The brochure you attached is for '65 and up.

  • Yes,
His info page is for the 3 cyl Fords.
Has nothing to do with the 62-64 Priors.
That info is from the Oaktree Ford Tractor page and is still available online.

  • I know that. The point was to show the difference between the early and later models.

  • Only (some) Ford aficionados know what a Sherman transmission is.

Everyone knows what 12 forward/ 3 reverse speeds is.

That's how I would have advertised it.

  • Re: '64 4000
  • I'd say most Ford guys are more familiar with the term SHERMAN and would assume 12 forward 23 rev was the same

  • A Sherman combination will give 12 forward speeds and 3 reverse. SoS.

  • Here is a video I found. Interesting things is someone comments that they have the exact tractor with 3 range transmission for 12 forward and 3 reverse speeds. It just could be this is correct and the one your looking at has that. Not listed in Tractor Data. com.

  • Re: '64 4000
  • The tractor I grew up on looked exactly like that. It was the best tractor I've ever been on and that includes the 3000 I have now. Ours had a 5 speed powersteering and live PTO. The live PTO was great. I'm not sure what this guy means by 12 speeds forward and 3 Reverse. Nice attachments on for it. It will run with 2 plows. We pulled a 3 bottom and it did quite well. I believe it is rated at around 45-55 HP. Standard transmission was 4 speeds forward and 1 reverse. Optional was the 5 speed with 1 reverse or the Select-O-Speed.
