  • low oil pressure
  • 62 ford 841 engine has about 5 psi oil pressure at idle when the engine is warm, the oil pressure is 25psi at 1500 rpm, the engine has new bearings properly installed at .002 clearance. the engine has the g-rotor pump. any suggestions. thanks mike

  • I know this will never happen but it would be nice if all of you very experienced Ford guys could get together and agree on what best oils and fluids to use in the 3 categories of climate we have in the States, mild, moderate and extreme. I read what all of you say and am always left confused. It may not be unanimous but I will be tempted to go with the vast majority if such exists. I am not being facetious but have several old Fords and all need some work. Thanks

  • I'm wondering if you removed the valve cover and watched the oiling at the rockers at idle what you would see with the 5 lb of pressure. I'm thinking if there is good oil flow up on top, it should be good all round. Am I wrong on that?

  • At the 5 psi there is no engine knock, I've had the valve cover off and you can see it gets oil at 5psi. This engine block was sent to a machine shop the crank was turned to .010 under and the mains line bored there are no cam bearings but the cam bores were checked for out of round and fit. rods and mains were set to .002 clearance.the oil pump was checked and found to be within spec. The last 2N I owned I also went thru the engine much the same way and had low oil pressure at idle. That engine meet the spec for oil pressure at 1500 rpm which was about 25 to 30 psi warm but also dropped to less than 5 psi at idle. Both tractors run fine make no noise or knocking sounds from the engine. My TO-20 hold 30psi oil pressure at idle and at wot. Mike

  • I was thinking I read somewhere that you could get insert bearings put in the cam journals on those engines.

Well anyway Mike, I wish you well with it. I got to get busy on my 8N. It is in dire need of some TLC. : (

  • I meant one of these days I got to get busy on the 8N , not right now : )

  • Syn oil is too thin to run until you get the OP up. OP is effected by bearing clearances when warm. That OP dropping to 5 PSI, yikes. If you have no metal in the pan, I would be looking at the OP mounting or the OP itself. If you had shavings in the oil, a tear down should be performed. For oil, I run the old diesel grade 15/40.
The heavy duty oil that has zinc in it to keep the flat tappet cams from going bad.
15/40 might be a bit thick, but her machine generally does not get used in the dead of winter.

  • There is no metal in the oil, this winter I plan on changing the oil pump. The reason for my question is that I've had 4 different ford tractors 2N, 8n, 2000 & the 841. all my ford tractors have had this problem, I've also noticed that ford has kept updating the oil pumps over the years to bigger pumps. This 841 had the same issue before I went thru the engine very low oil pressure at idle, the engine was badly worn. But I put everything back to spec. I can't be the only one having this problem. Thanks Mike

  • Re: low oil pressure
  • I have that problem on my 8ns. Except for one 8n that I rebuilt the pump. It has good pressure. Iím thinking the engine was taken good care of by the previous owners. You canít put metal back on the cam journals or the crank journals. And just because you have good bearing clearance it doesnít mean the bore is round. Even when you hone the crank it will still be OS. The fix is to install an OS cam and Iím not sure you can get them for old tractors. Iím using a 7010 turbo diesel that starts at 25 psi and drops to 5 and wonder when it will break. It just keeps going. Good luck.

  • Re: low oil pressure
  • The pump should be okay. Iím Gona guess you have wear someplace. Since the pressure starts at 25 and drops.

  • how about the cam, was it inspected?

  • Re: low oil pressure
  • It has a new camshaft, this engine was completely gone thru, new pistons & sleeves crank ground .010 under. I wish now I would have installed a new oil pump, I didn't because the old pump was within factory specs. I only use this tractor for mowing so it has 30 weight oil in the engine. Thanks for. the help Mike

  • Re: low oil pressure
  • good chance it is the pump or pump related.

Have you tried another oil gauge?

  • thanks for the info. it has a new oil pressure gauge, retried the old one same result, I'm on the 3rd oil change it's had 10W30 and 30 weight with no difference in pressure. thanks Mike

  • Re: low oil pressure
  • If you try changing oil you might try Amsoil Z-Rod 20W50 synthetic. Just a thought. Worth a try?

  • Re: low oil pressure
  • I mentio the Z-Rod 20-50 only because of my experience. My 8N had an engine rebuild before I purchased it. It pins the oil pressure gauge on start up and at higher RPM's. When working and hot I still have 20 pounds at idle. I live in a very cold climate in the winter and think the synthetic, on start up, gets to the engine quicker. I use only synthetics in my vehicles and small engines. Again, experience tells me that my engines, differentials and transmissions have less wear because of the synthetic oils. Dave
