  • Position control lever is stiff.....
  • Here is my prior post.......
I have been using my 1952 Ford 8N to run a 4' Bush-Hog Squealer lately. It has been extremely hot here and I find that after I have been running for some time that, when I attempt push the handle down to lower it, that there is considerable resistance. Everything still works as it should but there is resistance there which is not there when starting out. Hydraulics were rebuilt about five years ago with fresh fluid and also I changed the fluid last year. Using proper 90 weight oil as was recommended here. Dip stick for fluid shows it is up to correct level and does not show any water mixed with it. Tractor sits covered when not being used. Your thoughts?
So, just to add a thought here. Control is just as stiff operating up or down. It is also just as bad with nothing on the lift. I lubed the friction plate and disc with no improvement. It is also the same hot or cold. I am thinking there are no easy solutions? A complete disassembly is in order? David

  • My first guess reading those symptoms would be the friction disc or the shaft going from the handle to the internals. I would at least get it down to just the shaft (without all the stuff that rain can hit) before I dug into the tractors innards. YMMV, but the friction disc would be my first guess rather than a later guess. I admit there are plenty of other things to check.. I'm an easy stuff first guy.

  • Not the friction disc. I sprayed it and also loosened the castle nut and it made no difference. I am using it today to plough with. I just have to wonder when it will fail.

  • Finished my ploughing. Not something you should do once every four years. I had messed up some of it while trying to get settings and adjustments correct. Finally got all set correctly and finished with the last looking the best! Poition control continued to work even being as stiff as it was. I have never put the draft control in horizontal position. So, I tried it, wondering how it might affect the stiffness of position control. While in draft control the plough would not lift so I put the control lever back to vertical and worked the way I always had. But, it seemed that the position control worked easier when the draft comtrol was horizontal. What does that mean? I do not know.

  • no help on 'easier in draft than position'. The shaft with touch control lever and friction disk passes thru the tube attached to quadrant. There have been cases where rust builds up between the shaft & tube and binding results. If that is your problem, you can remove touch control lever & friction disk from shaft, then remove quadrant, leaving shaft inside the top cover (it won't come out from the outside) and clean up rust on shaft & inside tube.

  • Thanks JMOR. I will try this as it seems within my capabilities. DED

  • Just a short follow up note although I expect nobody will see it. I continued to use it as I had a little bush hogging to do. After that I would not be using the hydraulics again this year. So, I attached the bush hog. I definitely found the lever to be noticeably stiffer. So stiff that I had difficulty moving it with max effort. So, the tractor comes home this week and I will start my investigation. I will re-post when I discover what the problem is. David
