  • 6 Loop Rims and Centers
  • I'm researching getting some new rear tires and have a question for any of you who have used Tucker Tires. They offer some tires pre-mounted on the 6 loop rims. I've a 1950 8N and am wondering if my original centers will mount to the 6 loop rims without any problems, or will new centers need to be purchased also?

    Thanks!

  • The original Ford Hat Rims used special carriage bolts to secure the center discs on with. They were 5/8-18 NF, a fine thread which, carriage bolts are no longer produced in the industry. Also, the 5/8-18 Hex Nuts that were used had a 1-1/6" AF (Across Flats) dimension. They were not special, that's just the way they made them back then -HD. the flat washers too were nice and thick -HD as well. The good news is Dennis Carpenter Reproductions makes the bolts, washers, and nuts, exact-as-original, and sells them in a kit which will do one wheel and disc with 6 bolts, 6 nuts, and 6 washers. The bolts are in the exact-as-original 2.68" length as well. They don't make bolts in odd lengths anymore either. Now you can go to the hardware store and buy 5/8-11 NC (Coarse Thread) carriage bolts and hex nuts with a 1" or 15/16" AF dimension too. her is a LINK to Carpenters site. I usually look at JUST8Ns first but they don't list the kit, only each piece sold separately.

  • The aftermarket rims are designed to fit the OEM centers and sometimes they do without any issues.

Other times, a bit of grinding is necessary to relieve slight interferences.

  • Modern aftermarket 10 or 12 x 28 6-Loop rims will fit the original 8N or 9N 28" center discs no problem. They don't make nor sell new Ford center discs anyway.

  • I got a set of Tucker tires pre mounted on rims and they bolted right to my 8n centers with no problem at all.

  • I got a set of rears from Tucker Tire on the loop rims and they bolted right up to the centers with no problem. I did need to get new nuts and bolts. The old ones were not coming out of the rims in good condition. All I could find at the local hardware store was coarse thread, and a bit too long. The original rim bolts are fine thread and a special length. I eventually bought the correct "just like original" hardware.

  • That's good news! I replaced the bolts several years ago and they seem to still be in good condition. But, that will depend on how easy they come out. Thanks for responding and the help!
