  • Back again....guy with the stiff position control lever....
  • So, this morning I took my tractor and discs to my field for some work. When I got there the discs would not go down. I tried everything. Tractor on and off. Hydraulics on and off and position control would not operate. So, I picked rocks for 45 minutes until the three point and disc leaked down. I left the hydraulics off and used it that way until I was leaving for camp. I turned the hydraulics on to lift the disc and it worked fine.....BOTH UP AND DOWN!!! Go figure! I get to camp and they would not lower again.
I expect that somewhere I have a valve sticking. I checked the archives and could not get anything there........HELP
    David

  • I have an 8N that does not occasionally. Rapidly moving the control lever up and down gets it to release. Maybe time to drop the pump and give everything a good cleaning.

  • HCooke....thanks. Dropping the pump is not in my area of expertise. I guess I should tackle these problems and learn myself. Thanks for the tip. I have never been inside my tractor and have no-one near me to go to. I will search in the how-to section here. Thanks David

  • Before pump removal I would remove round inspection port and look inside for sign of sticking. Probably is, but might save some work?

    couldn't restrain myself:

  • "and look inside for signs of sticking." Now, just exactly how am I to do that? I have never had the inspection plate off. And, if I peeked in there would have no idea what I was seeing or what to look for. Is there anything in my owners manual about this? I will look. Could there be some problem with the 80W90 gear oil I put in there last year?

  • Just looking in there isn't enough, unless you are looking for leaks from the top cover area, while operating the system, but that is a different problem from teh one you describe. With the engine off, reach down in the fluid from the right side cover (the one with the dipstick). Feel your way down the touch control lever to the valves. Work the valve thingy back and forth and feel for any sticking. Last time I did this, seems like I moved the touch control lever with one hand, while the other felt to see if the valve was moving for the full range. If the valve sticks, before touch control lever moves the full stroke, try to work the valve free by hand. If this "fixes" the problem, flush and change the fluid as soon as you can.

  • Simple question. I am looking at my owners manual. It says "recommended fluid for use in all models is Ford M2C 134-D hydraulic fluid. It is also permissable to use extreme pressure gear lubricant in the transmission, differential and hydraulic system." Question.....would it help my sticking problem if I changed out to the hydraulic fluid instead of the 80w90 I have in it? Is the hydraulic fluid available in most stores which carry tractor supplies?

Maybe. I would clean out the system first.

" Is the hydraulic fluid available in most stores which carry tractor supplies?

Read the fine print. If the specs say meets Ford 134 then you are good to go.

  • Thanks to everyone who posted here. I will be bringing my 8N home from camp soon so I will have it in a heated garage for the winter months. I do all my maintenance during the winter. So, will try the suggestions from my friends here. I am on the short strokes with my plots so will only need my harrows and my last run over before seeding with my pallet smoother and roller. Dave
