  • It Pays To Comparison Shop
  • Last week I was shopping for a new 12V GRP 35 battery for a 9N. I first was at our trusty local auto parts store, the mom & pop store that has been in business for 50 years here, not one of the latest fashionable franchise stores, looking for some Ford Blue paint. They have it all, Champion & Auto-Lite plugs always in stock, coils, caps, rotors, points, batteries, and mix their own paint. I was surprised (not really) to find they only carried DEKA, INTERSTATE, and AC-DELCO brand batteries. I noted their prices, $84.00 for a GRP 35 DEKA 12V battery, 550 CCA, with a 10 year warranty. I then went around town to all the other places -CNH, Wally World, TSC, Auto Zone; and one or two others. The average price at these places was about $150-$170. TSC sells their Traveller Brand, 2-year warranty, but has a cheaper brand too, and it was $99 but only had a 90 day warranty. There was no doubt which one I went with -the DEKA. This was the first time I actually did some price comparison on batteries. By the way, the CNH dealer was the most expensive place. It only confirms what some of us have been saying for years. Invest in a good brand battery. You won't regret it.

  • When shopping batteries it might pay to measure the actual tray width, depth and height available, then look at all the group options on a BCI chart. Most trays and universal hardware will work just fine with slightly larger or smaller batteries, unless you go nuts. For most tractors you are probably not using special clamps that clamp a ridge at the bottom of the battery case like many cars. For a 9N, you might have one of those fancy covers with a lid over the battery. When special hardware has to match up, group numbers are more important. When approximate size and terminal locations are the only issues, many other batteries will work just fine and some may be more popular/cheaper. In most cases, for tractors, I'm just looking for the same or a slightly smaller size, with plus and minus terminals in the right place. Reversed terminals can be more of a problem than it might seem. There are enough options with the right terminals to just avoid any problems reversed terminals may cause.

  • Yep, that is why you go with a GRP1 for 6V and a GRP 25 or 35 for 12V on your N tractor. Battery hold-downs will work fine. If you don't use a hold-down of some sort you are asking for trouble.

  • Tim I had used Deka batteries for years and bought them from 2 different family owned and operated parts stores like you describe. I compared battery prices one day at TSC who had the Exide line of batteries. Knowing that Exide made the John Deere "Strong Box" batteries and having very good experience with them when I was in my phase of collecting JD lawn &garden tractors, I switched to TSC Exides and have been very pleased. I could buy the Exide for usually 20 bucks cheaper than the Deka and the TSC employees didn't care what size battery you brought in as a core. I went to get a group 24 Exide a few weeks ago and discovered TSC had switched to their house brand (Traveler) as you described. Traveler brand appears to be made by Johnson Controls whom I'm told makes 80% of batteries nationwide. The other 20% being Deka and Interstate I'm also told by the Deka rep. I don't care for a Johnson Controls built battery. So I've switched back to Deka. Its a shame because the local TSC had a big following for the Exide batteries and they stayed rotated and fresh in inventory. Once again a good thing had to come to an end. FWIW. SoS

  • East Penn makes DEKA and DURACELL. I've been using INTERSTATE in all my vehicles now for the past 20 years and pleased with their performance.

  • It does pay to comparison shop. I had a front seal go bad on a recent restored 8N
Funk Conversion tractor. Started looking for a seal and found one with Dennis Carpenter that was $3.95 but wanted something quicker. I went to the local Outdoor Power
that used to be a Ford Dealership and it was $52.00+. Then went to NAPA and they hadto order one and apologized for it costing $17.00. This is an example of how it pays
to shop around and I have an order in for 4 from Dennis Carpenter.

How about a name, address and phone number. It might be worth the drive.

We are going to Mount Pleasant on the 13th and 14th on some business and to visit our granddaughter at CMU. Then, try to make it to Caseville to visit my BIL. May squeeze in a McD in Lapeer on the way home. I'll let you know.
