  • 12V, neg ground, front mount. I have seen a kit that will allow a canister type coil to be used on a front mount distributor with electronic ignition using a special aftermarket distributor cap. Anyone try this? What was your result?

  • Once started it runs fine. The goal is to make this machine more reliable so that when it's 10 degrees out and I have to plow it will go. I did the 12V conversion and it's been hard starting ever since. Fouling plugs. I want a hotter coil and no points. Summit Racing shipped the kit yesterday. I will report back.

  • Measure steady state coil primary current (points closed engine stopped). Need close to 4 amperes. Too much resistance and the resulting too low coil current will result in your hard starting experience.

  • Put in highest gear and grab big rear tire and rock it.
    Or, current does not have to pass thru points, so you could just tie distributor side of coil primary to ground.

  • Photos have circulated of several homemade versions. As long as the adapter keeps moisture out of the distributor, and provides secure terminals for low and high voltage, it should work. The round can coil is a better design, but most of the adapters I've seen create several new problems. If the intent is to make the tractor more reliable, adding more failure points isn't the way to do it. One of the best looking attempts was carved from a block of wood. Can't say if it worked well or lasted very long, but it was a work of art.

  • I have that set up on my 8n that what was on it when I bought it
    I have had no issues at all with starting or running works just fine
