  • Main Bearings
  • I need to order a set of Main bearings for my 1951 8N. All the sites say to measure before ordering. What do I measure? The diameter on the crank?

  • Well after all the recommendations here and another post about cleaning the block I did some more searching and finally found a shop that will boil the block and inspect and grind the crank shaft just a few miles from my house. I'm thrilled at this discovery as I was beginning to suspect the EPA had shut down all the boil baths.

  • It is impossible to do proper engine work without a service manual. The manual will have specifications that you compare to measurements taken as described in the manual. If you need main bearings the crank probably needs to be turned. If the crank is badly scored or has already been turned you might need a new crank. Rod bearings/journals may be in worse shape than mains. If you don't have a manual and the tools to do engine work, it's best to have an engine shop do the work right the first time.

  • There is more to it than that.

More likely than not, the crank is out of round which means it needs to be turned.

Best take it to a machine shop and let them tell you how much it needs to be turned & what size bearings you will need.
