  • 12 volt conversion
  • I recently converted my '52 8n to 12 volt system. First try I heard a click and nothing. Checked wiring and it appears OK. Measure 13.5 volts at the starter through the solenoid when I push the start button. Original 6v starter. Worked the last time I tried. Any ideas?
    First time with ntractor club.

  • The solenoid is making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused

    1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49. Or get it load

    2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)

    3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)**

    4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

** You can't see corrosion under the insulation.

  • First off, Welcome to the board! 13.5 volts tells me you have a bad ground somewhere.
Perhaps even a weak batt connection. I usually remove ground and power wires and clean everything up so it is shiny before final assembly. Just 'looking clean' might be a problem.
Good place to start. After it's cleaned up a light coat of oil can prevent future corrosion.

  • An easy fix. One of those, I should have known. thanks.

  • I would think that that voltage at the starter would be plenty, How's life on the hill? you retired yet?

  • How do you know about the hill? I don't recognize the name.

  • The hill comment was meant for Bruce. Did you get you problem solved?

  • Re: 12 volt conversion
  • yes, cleaning the connections makes a big difference. BTW, I also live on a hill and am nearing retirement.

  • Re: 12 volt conversion
  • Clean connections are always needed, you get voltage thru them but not the current flow you need.
Retirement is good!! Bruce lives on a hill above where I live. To him I am a flat lander!

  • Yes Clean terminals and switches too, make ALL the difference...
Had run outta contact cleaner and my igntion switch needed a dose in order to make "Shifty th` 50" run...
Now I`m on replacing the starter, it Zinngs more than driving the flywheel...
I done cleaned and lubed it months ago...
