  • Loader help
  • I have a Ford 4000 that I recently acquired a Lord loader for. I got it all hooked up, added about ten gallons of hydraulic fluid and tried running it without any luck. This is a tube reservoir type loader with the pump running directly off the crankshaft. I have no idea of the fluid capacity or if there's a priming procedure that I need to do to get this thing going. Any suggestions/tips would be much appreciated!

  • There should be no need to prime the system.

First step is confirm pump operation,

Check the suction side oil delivery - with the engine off put a bucket/drip pan under the suction line connection at the pump, disconnect the line, and see what you get. Should be a gravity flow out the end of the suction line.

If you have fluid delivery next step would be to confirm pump output. Reconnect the suction line and disconnect the high pressure line going to the control valve. Put it in one of your empty 5 gallon buckets with a weight or hook to keep it from flopping around and start the engine. You should get a strong steady flow from the pump.

After you have done that test and reported results we can move to the next phase.

  • Thanks, very helpful! Turned out it was clogged on the supply side. Cleaned out the sludge blockage and now it's working fine. Thanks again.

  • Glad you found the problem and I would be looking at adding/replacing a suction side strainer and a return side filter.

  • Sounds to me like a good plan. Intake, output, controls being isolated. That should identify possibly the filter plugged, pump impeller not turning, output plugged, control valve movement not aligining passages to cylinders. One other thing could be occuring. A blown cylinder piston seal allowing fluid bypass back to the resivore. BTDT (been there, done that)
