  • Most of the good reasons for buying a premium battery have more to do with quality construction and durability such as for ambulance, fire, and racing. Some of those premium qualities should increase service life. However, I do not expect any premium battery to last enough longer to be worth paying premium prices. I usually hook a solar or plug-in maintainer to every battery that is going to sit for more than three or four days. When I started using maintainers, dead battery problems went away, and standard batteries started lasting at least 8 years.

  • Optima. The company made a good name for itself and then sold out. New owner moved operations to Mexico. That was a few years ago. New optima's come with a 50/50 quality expectation. You might get a good one, you might not. The new AGM batteries are a bit better on quality expectations. About a 95/05 chance of a good one.
Then again we only had about 1500 vehicles in our local fleet before I retired.

  • Generally regarded as a quality AGM battery but priced at a premium.
