  • Getting serious about replacing the Cam Follower pin in my 860.

    Master Parts Catalog lists two! 5/16 x 7/8 and 3/16 x 1 3/8

I'm presuming I have the 5/16 but will not know until I open it unless one of you can advise me where the 3/16 is used.

Also I seem to remember a post in which it was pointed out the pin was not long enough to fully engage the cam. I don't know if that was on the hundred series or not. Should I be buying a 1 inch pin?

    Thanks

    Jack

  • The last one I replaced was matched-up with a grade 8 bolt long enough to have a smooth shank that would work. Cut the head off. Cut the correct length of shank. Grind the ends to remove burrs and chamfer. Seems like I also had to turn the OD down slightly to press-fit into the hole. It's been working fine for several years and I didn't have to wait for shipping.

  • JMOR is correct.

The OEM pin is not 5/16 Dia., but many folks use a more readily available 5/16" pin.

The CNH pin is the correct Dia. but most dealers no longer stock it. Your dealer may need to order it. They come in packages of 5.

The CNH part number on the spare pin that I have in my hand is 3740725 but I believe that the number has changed. The package that I have is dated 01/13/99.

  • Thanks Dean.

Attempted to verify which is the current part number. Your's apparently is but the last character comes up as S, not 5.

  • S is in fact correct. See my other response, but I believe there are problems with identification of the items 52, 44 and probably others in those catalogs at Messicks and CNH.

  • Headed to the farm but will try to remember to look at that later.

    Thanks,

  • My nickel says, 0.309" dia X 7/8" length.

5/16 will be quite an interference fit at 0.3125 or 0.0035 tighter than intended, but there are claims of success.

  • Thanks JMOR!

Interesting! I remembered a previous series of posts and looked in the archives. Found that .309 but thought it applied to 8N's. Guess I'll detour past the NH dealer on my way to the farm.

Are we both talking the same part number? Mine shows P/N 73298-S18

  • I do not find 73298-S18 in Messicks or CNH catalogs. Furthermore, their item 52 appears as a wrong identification so far a I can determine.

  • Looks like Dean came up with the correct part number except the last character is S, not 5.

My Master Parts guide is PA-8058 published August 1959. Plenty of time for lots of changes.

  • The FORD suffix codes of 'S' are just for what the OEM finish spec was. A Plain 'S' designated Plain finish. S7 was Cadmium plate, S8 was Zinc Plate, S19 was Bras plate, et al.

  • Agreed, Jack. Just took another look.

    Sorry about the confusion.

  • I posted 15/16 dia on the other forum because that's what Dennis Carpenter's catalogue says.
