  • Stuck motor cocktail?
  • Just curious as to what people use? I have a 9n with a stuck motor from sitting. I also have a couple gallons of ATF fluid sitting on the shelf and was wondering if I should dilute it with mineral spirits or something else?

  • FYI: MMO -The Truth
  • Just a heads-up on MMO. There's no 'mystery' about it even though the manufacturer doesn't want anyone to know what's really in it. Go to our SAFETY FORUM for MSDS info. They (MMO) now link to a Chinese web site so can further avoid disclosing product ingredients. They use to just say "Proprietary Information" and didn't list ingredients, then did in English for a while. The current LIMK (see below) shows an ingredient list. Most of these 'snake-oil' products use up to and around 99% plain old mineral spirits as the main ingredient with a few inert things tossed in. Note “Petroleum Distillates” and “Stoddard Solvent” are both terms for Mineral Spirits. You are better off buying a gallon or 5 gallon pail of plain mineral spirits from NAPA or a reliable supplier and using it or making your own mixture. Mineral Spirits is also the same substance used in charcoal lighter fluid, and paint thinner, usually 100% pure. Yeah, it is your tractor and you can do anything you want to it. I’m merely pointing out the facts so you can get the best value for your dollar.

  • All good to know.
I think I have had the same can of MMO for 30 to 40 years. I think my grandfather gave it to me.
I did buy a new easy pour plastic bottle about 15 years ago because it had a cool looking bottle and was on sale. I don't think buying 1 quart in 30 years is going to break the bank.
5 gallons of mineral oil would probably last me 100 years. But thats just me.

Remember the teflon coating you could pour in your engine to make it last longer. I am mostly sure that was snake oil too but they convinced me to put some in my 1986 4 cyl Jeep. It still runs like a top and burns no oil.

  • Re: FYI: MMO -The Truth
  • Petroleum distillate is a VERY broad term that covers everything from gasoline to bunker and beyond. Stoddard solvent is a very SPECIFIC distillate. The exact mix of distillates used to formulate MMO is still a secret although Stoddard solvent is clearly a major component.

  • Re: Stuck motor cocktail?
  • Very good question.
I generally start off when I find a stuck motor with a good strong gin and tonic.
Then I will take some 2 cycle oil mixed 20/1 with gasoline and add some MMO to the concoction. If it is really rusty I will add some ATF and more gasoline.
Then I generally tap on things with a hammer and heat things up with a heater of some sort. Then I generally have a Bud Light and see how things are later in the afternoon.
If it is really cold outside I swap the Bud Light with a little Virginia Gentleman or some Dewers on ice.

  • I was wondering which concoction do you drink and which goes in the stuck engine...Oh, and I use a Manhattan instead of the G&T.. works for me.

  • I'm with you. While reading this thread I just finished a Rusty Nail, my version, Johnny Walker Black and Drambuie 50/50. Sometimes I have to adjust the mix because my "by guess" measure needs to be adjusted with more of one or the other, sometimes both.

  • Adirondack Manhattan; 2 shots LTD, 1 1/2 shots sweet Vermouth, and 2 tea spoons "real" Maple Syrup. Serve over ice, enjoy...

  • Re: Stuck motor cocktail?
  • Oh, I forgot to say... I will pull the spark plugs and dump a few ounces in each cylinder and try to slosh it around the best I can. I also dump a little on all exposed joints and pivots.

  • Re: Stuck motor cocktail?
  • I've already done the G&T and MMO, so it looks like I'm off to a good start. It hasn't run in 20 years, and sat outside for the last 10. I liked the suggestion about putting the weight on the crank. So for now, it's soaking in the 50/50 mix that many recommended. But here are a couple more questions... should I add more cocktail to the cylinders each day? Does it ever make sense to try and roll the motor backwards? At what point do I give up? Days? Weeks? Months? Years?

  • Re: Stuck motor cocktail?
  • If it has tires and wheels on it I would put it in high gear and rock the back tire back and forth as hard as I can. Just grab the top of the tire and pull it back and push it forward as hard as you can. Then have another G&T...

  • Re: Stuck motor cocktail?
  • Finally made it to town to get the acetone to mix with the atf. When I got home I gave the crank one last push with the braker bar and she let loose. That was after $8 of MMO, three days, four G&Ts and five tall boys.

  • Good deal. Success tastes good.
Trade in the acetone for some Bombay Saffire...

  • Re: Stuck motor cocktail?
  • Take a short fat glass and fill with ice.
Squeeze two lime wedges directly over the ice. Drop the lime wedges into the glass.
Pour a generous amount of Bombay Saffire over the lime wedges.
Add gust enough tonic to cover the ice. Stirr lightly wih a fork.
    Drink... aaahhh...

  • Re: Stuck motor cocktail?
  • Sure -I'd try 50/50 ATF and Mineral Spirits if'N ya got both handy. Both are excellent lubes. BTW, Charcoal lighter fluid and paint thinner are the same thing as Spirits. By 'stuck' do you mean it won't turn over? Have you tried a hand crank? How long has it been setting?

  • Re: Stuck motor cocktail?
  • I believe there are degrees of "stuck".

I used straight ATF. Think it was three days, rocked on the rear wheel (third gear), it came loose.

  • I have seen vehicles jacked up and set back down on the crank handle to apply constant pressure.

  • I will second the 50-50 mix of acetone and transmission fluid. Absolutely the best penetrant on this earth. It will not be long before it is free. Best of luck. Dave

  • Add me to list of fans of the 50/50 mix..... and I don't live in iron worm country.....any more. I keep a spray bottle of it for the times I have to break some rusted parts or pieces apart
